“a great two weeks”
Reviewed November 22, 2008

Reviewed by Martin & Pam.

We stayed at the Albatross in the first two weeks of September. We travelled with friends and their review is very different to ours, they had a different , more noisy room and they had been to these apartments before. We really enjoyed our stay, the apartments are pretty modern and comfortable and they are air conditioned between 8pm and 8am. This can get quite loud when you are trying to sleep but it works and keeps the rooms cool. Andy and Rosie are a nice couple, we did notice that they could get a bit moody sometimes but mostly they were fine. The bar is pricey if you drink british beer but I stuck to the Alpha lager at 2 euros for a big frosted glass and it was very nice. The apatrments are situated at the end of the main street of kefalos and about 20 yards from the beach. The pool area is very clean and there are lots of sun loungers to go around. Andy and Rosie organise a Greek night on sundays and it is a great excuse to get some free drinks and try Zorba The Greek dancing. All in all we really enjoyed our stay here and would return again. The one complaint we have is that we imagined we were going to a private apartment complex but the bar and pool are available to passing trade and this is taken advantage of by many of the ex-pats who seemed to think they owned the place.

The owners are very standoffish almost rude. The apartments are basic and clean. The pool area is good and the pool is well tended to. Id advise against eating there as the manager is spraying insect killer or wasp killer from a can whilst cooking. In the Uk this would be a breach of food health and safety. The British managers show preferential treatment to certain guests mostly the "friends of the Albatross" who return year after year. The first day there we didnt not have a very good welcome from the managers who were down right ignorant to say the least. There are theme evenings akin to the Bristish rowdy pubs situated within the UK. The ex-pats and friends from the village frequent these evenings which last with plenty of noise until 3 am, which end up with some jumping in the pool fully clothed. So if you are looking for relaxation quiet and early nights to destress from life in the UK then do not come here. The prices on the drinks at the bar are expensive compared to some other bars within the resort. The apartments are clean but very basic with very uncomfortable beds which have lelft me with terrible backache. If you have the mis fortune of a ground floor room then expect no privacy what so ever.

As our coach pulled up outside of the Albatross we were immediately greeted by Rosie one of the Managers.

Andy and Rosie are an English couple who have lived in Kefalos for 6 years. The run the apartments for the Greek owners Manolis and Sebe and it has to be said that they do a wonderful job.

The rooms are absolutely spotless and are cleaned everyday (except Sundays), the beds are changed twice a week and the towels 3 times. One unusual thing for a Greek apartment is that the bathrooms had shower cubicles with sliding doors and a shower you could actually hook on the wall. For those who have travelled to Greece you will appreciate that this is not common place and it does make a change not flooding the bathroom everytime you have a shower. All the rooms have a seaview / harbour view.

There is a small beach just across the road but the swimming pool at the Albatross is so nice with comfortable sun loungers that we didn't bother with the beach (this was a first for us as we are beach people). One advantage of the pool is that it is primarily adults that stay here so no noisy children in the pool. Andy served breakfasts and snacks from the snack bar which are great.

Andy and Rosie introduces all of the residents to one another which creates a very friendly atmosphere. The arrange a quiz night on Fridays for which Andy sets the questions, this is very popular with the guests and ex-pats alike. On Sundays there is a free bbq evening put on by the owners which is another great way of getting to know the other guests, during the evening Rosie teaches the guests a couple of Greek dances as well as playing a variety of other music for dancing. There is also a very well stocked bar.

Prices at the Albatross and in deed in Kefalos generally are very reasonable which surprised us bearing in mind the weak pound against the Euro at the moment. The average price for a large beear is €2 and a G & T €3. For a 2 course meal with 2 large bears the average price we paid each evening was around €22.

Overall we have to say that this was one of the best holidays we have ever had and we will certainly be going back to the the Albatross. We met some great people on this holiday and hope to meet up again one day.

This clean and modern property is very well situated near the small harbour and across only one narrow road to the beach and about a hundred yards from the local bus stop. There are several quite well stocked 'supermarkets' within a short distance. There is a good choice of restaurants and tavernas in Kefalos, 'Maria's' at the other end of the bay, near the bus square, had the most authentic Greek feel and the food was excellent.

We had looked for a quiet resort at the end of the season just for rest and relaxation and did not expect the British managers, their friends and family to be playing loud music, karaoke and delivering their drunken renditions of 'Danny Boy', ' The Wonder of You' etc until three o'clock in the morning on at least two nights of our seven night holiday.

We were never given the first drink that was offered by the Manager upon our arrival, we were not greeted with even a 'Good morning' by the Manageress on our first morning so it seems that they choose which guests to favour -or not! It seemed to be a strange coincidence that on several days we had no hot water at all, (or the Solar Power system needs upgrading !!!) We have travelled widely throughout Greece and the islands in early, mid and late season and although we have been without ANY water occasionally, we have never just had cold water throughout the day and evening.

Whilst we would not choose to stay at the Albatross again and could not recommend the accomodation for a quiet or comfortable holiday, overall the resort is very picturesque, the weather was comfortably mild, the sea was quite cool and it's worth making the boat trip over to Nissyros for the day.

Great apartments located in a good place with a wide choice of places to eat and drink nearby at very cheap prices.

Apartments and pool area are very well kept by the English couple that run them on behalf of the Greek owners.

Nice bright clean rooms with good facilities.

On the minus side:

Located quite close to the main harbour in Kefalos so traffic can be busy at certain times of the day when excursions are running.

Drinks and ice cream, food etc s at the Albatross bar are probably the most expensive we found in the resort.

Snacks and drinks are very pricey here and Greek dishes are certainly not their speciality, usual full English is available if that is your thing.

Seems to be a weird fetish about cleanliness that can make you feel nervous as the place is kept immaculately clean every second of the day. I love cleanliness but it can be quite annoying at times when you are trying to relax.

Manageress needs to chill out a little as she watches everyone like a hawk especially if you are purchasing refreshments from the local supermarkets at far cheaper prices.

Also don't drop anything on the floor by accident as you may bang heads with the manageress when you bend down to pick it up, She will get there first I assure you!

On the whole average but not a traditional "laid back" friendly Greek experience if that is what you are expecting from this property.

Resort however is fantastic and very good value for eating out elswhere in Kefalos.

Just returned from a 2 week stay at the Albatross in Kefalos and although we have never stayed at the same place twice we will definitely be going back there. The "Gold Choice" rating in the First
Choice brochure is very much deserved and we could not fault it on anything. It is in a great position with beautiful views, the beach is just across the road and shops and tavernas are all just a short walk. Everything is kept spotlessly clean and the rooms are really nice and a good size. Lovely pool area with plenty of sunbeds and umbrellas. The Albatross is run by a wonderful English couple called Rose and Andy and we cannot praise them highly enough. They try so hard to make sure everyone has a great holiday and for us it was one of the best we've had. (Andy also makes a lovely breakfast!) The free
barbecue night on Sundays is a really enjoyable evening and also quiz
night on Fridays. Kefalos is also a really nice resort, was very quiet while we were there and everyone is really friendly (definitely
not for party animals!!) We definitely made the right choice when we picked the Albatross and can highly recommend it.
