Although the town was quiet as it was out of the main tourist season, the Palace was still open and we were there on the day the fountains where in operation late in the afternoon. Ask in the hotel or around, which days they are being switched on.
The Palace was obviously a very grand hunting palace with beautiful gardens similar to Versailles in France.
Would love to go back in June to September.

Truly amazing gardens on huge scale backing onto beuatiful mountains and adjacent to the royal palace. Incredible number of ornate fountains which are only switched on very rarely. Highly recommended

Great place to spend the afternoon after a good meal. Expect to do a lot of walking, but it well worth it. We visited in the winter, so it wasn't as nice as what it would look like in the spring or summer when the flowers are out. This is Spain's equivalent to the Palace of Versailles in France. They have an amazing labyrinth (maze) on the property, good fun for the kids.

It is well worth spending a little extra to get a guided tour: these tours are available several languages and are done by real experts who know and love the palace. Go on the tour with a good guide and you will learn so many things that you would otherwise miss about the history of the palace and its contents. Highlights include the tapestries, the china and the magnificent paintings. Don't miss it!
