Situated in the Casentino Valley this castle dominates the landscape for miles around. We arrived by train to Poppi new town and found a bus which would take us up to the old original town. We stayed in a small hotel which was converted from the original stables to the castle. The food there was excellent and they roasted their meats on a large open fire...Mmmmm! Out in the courtyard there is an outdoor cafe where light meals, coffees and other drinks can be putchased. You can also sit on one of the benches overlooking the beautiful valley.
Poppi Castle is steeped in history and is quite an amazing place to spend a few hours. The main architectural features are the wonderful staircases inside (which are long and high and remind me of those in the Harry Potter movies).......they seem to go everywhere! There is a fantastic old library which houses a great amount of printed15th century manuscripts. Another attraction inside is the layout of the Battle of Campaldino.....where the Counts Guidi finally lost their hold over the area. . ...and there is also a little shop where you can purchase postcards and miniature relics of the battle....and castle souvenirs.
The decoration of the walls on the upper floors is magnificent....there is so much more to this castle than meets the eye.....and it is definitely worth a detour.
