“An fascinating travel back in time!”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

The Riebeek Valley Hotel has alot of charm and the spirit of good old times is still around. I prefer hotels with charm and history! But the place really needs to be put back in better shape. There are so many good qualities, including wonderful staff. We really liked our bedroom, no need for improvement there. We slept well, the bathroom was nice and the was a private sitting area outside. The AC was working well and cooled us down on hot days. We spent 2 days at the hotel and enjoyed the wonderful view over the valley, nipping to a glass of wine at the porch in the evening, reading and relaxing after biking tours during the day. We felt like being back in time with the old funiture and the great spirit of the place.

The garden needs a little care and upgrading, to be put back to its old glory!

My husband tried the pools and found them ok. I didn't go in even though I liked the green style outdoor pool. The pool area just needs some tidying up and also some new "old styled" furniture! The area is not as inviting as it could have been, and there is not room nor equipment for many people to enjoy the sun or sit under an umbrella around the pool. There are few sunbeds and chairs. The furniture is very tired and not up to the spirit of the rest of the hotel. The indoor pool is not attractive at all.

The breakfast is good with lots of choises! We found the dining room very clean and the service is great.

I suppose the hotel kitchen is not used to serve dinner to groups, where not everyone wants the fixed meny. Our biking group of 17 had an "Faulty Tower" experience out on the front lawn (very nice to sit outside!), even though we had made the orders the night before. The buffet dinner the evening before was good!

Well, we ended up at getting main courses before starters, some didn't get anything, we got what we hadn't ordered and it was really chaotic. The food, when it arrived wasn't top class either. My lamb curry was almost only bones. John Cleese was the only one missing, but we manage to laugh at it all afterwards!

This place has so much, it can easily be brought back to the old glory! We would absolutely go back, but we would go out for dinner. Lots of good restaurants around!

Thanks to a great offer we got online with a coupon company, we enjoyed one of the suites of this country hotel: Big room with huge King bed, nice bathroom with a bath big enough for 3.
Breakfast was also quite good and the service offered by the staff was also excellent.
The only issue was abou the pools : the indoor one was undergoing renovation since the ceiling of the room fell into the pool ! (gives you an indication of how old the hotel really is) and the outdoor one was not very attractive as it had been reconverted in a so called ecological pool (that is a nice way to say that they added some plants in the pool for it to clean itself ecologically without chemicals : the issue is that it became too ecological now since it resembles a pond and has frogs in it ! The kids outisde area is so run down that my kid could not even use it. Overall OK if you intend to enjoy the room and the service only and if you get a good deal !

The pics on the website led us to believe we would be staying in a luxurious country hotel on the hillside overlooking the Riebeek Valley, with a large, pristine swimming pool. What a disappointment! This hotel has sadly seen better days. The main area, where breakfast and dinner are served, is chaotic, full of plants to hide the former bandstand, open to the elements, and we had difficulty finding a table for breakfast that didn't have dead insects on it. The indoor swimming pool was dirty and cold, in a dismal, gloomy room. The outdoor pool was full of plants and algae - we didn't dare swim in it. Our room was basic but clean, but the door to the bathroom left little by way of privacy. Having said that, the staff were extremely helpful and friendly, I couldn't fault them. I imagine they must be a little embarrassed at the deterioration in what must have been a beautiful property.

Despite the negative comments on TripAdvisor me and my friend decided to be brave and take the risk of staying at the Riebeek Valley Hotel.

What a pleasant surprise. Our room were beautifully prepared and the air conditioner running, friendly staff and scrumptious meal. The receptionist, Erna, was a star. She explained to us when referring her to the website, what was done in order to save the Hotel from closing down after the new owners bought it in 2007, Erna also explained to us what the Hotel’s policy is to go green- therefore solar heating and the organic pool which approximately takes 8 months to settle.

I have seen this beautiful Victorian hotel sporadically for the past 10 years, also attended a garden wedding where all the guests could stay in the hotel - a lot of fun! It is clear that the new owners are working non-stop at upgrades and expansions, with an amazing collection of antiques and paintings. The pool has recently been converted into an organic pool and this will take some time to optimize, but the water was lovely and soft. Everybody working there is friendly, proud of their work and very hospitable. I am sad to see these negative comments, because my stay was just lovely.

Room Tip: Room 1 and 3.

I must say that i get really scared when i see a tourism grading of 4 stars for this hotel. It is in the region of a 3 star hotel and is in serious need of an overhaul. It says no diving in the swimming pool yet the pool , probably due to lack of care has been converted into a pond. The rooms are clean but very basic. They also are not scared to charge which i find the most upsetting as we paid R1450 for our double room. You can find a lovely B&B for half the price and better amenities.
