“Very nice weekend in Raglan”
Reviewed November 2, 2012

We spend three night at the Solscape backpacker and it was very nice.
We rent a unit call Sky Heaven that is originally for 4 people due to it has two rooms, but it has a very big launch too so we asked if we could add an extra couple to stay 6 people in total and they agree very kindly, of course we had to pay an extra fee but it wasn't much. The price is really reasonable and the unit was very well equipped.
The staff there are eco warriors, so all the food you can buy at the reception is free range, they harvest they own veggies and they are very conscious separating the garbage.
The view from the place is beautiful, the backpacker is in the top of a hill so you can see the beach from the view points and it is amazing.
We had a great time, even doe the weather was really bad that weekend.
Raglan is a beautiful place to visit and Solscape is definitely a place that I would recomende to stay in.

Room Tip: The entrance of the place is just after a curve in the rute, so you should drive slow when you know...

Stayed here for one night in a double caboose (recycled train carriage) and it was great, well priced for the location as Raglan is good with plenty of nice beaches. Showers were nice and hot and clean, the only thing which let this place down is no power socket in the rooms? Couldnt charge mobile phone or camera batteries? Other than that great setting, nice idea and a friendly place.

Solscape's Eco Bach is a little bit of luxury in an unexpected place. It's very modern and unique and offers amazing views as well. You can easily walk to Ngarunui Beach to surf or just play in the waves. You will need transportation or be OK with hitchhiking to get into town but the bus from Hamilton will drop you off right at the entrance on the days it goes down to Whale Bay. I can't wait for my next trip to Raglan.

Room Tip: The Eco Bach is the way to go if you can spring for it. You would never know it's at a backpacke...

We have stayed here on 3 separate trips to NZed. It is a great location and is set on a beautiful piece of property. The kitchen is usually packed and can be frustrating. The showers can be a bit on the cold side as well. Hippies and wannabe hippies flock to this location and for some that could be a turn off. You will meet some characters. The caboose rooms are a unique experience and if you surf Raglan is right there!! Next time we hit Raglan we will be there again.

Solscape sits on top of the hill overlooking the beach at Raglan. It's a surfer's dream and a beautiful view for non-surfers. I could have watched the water all day. Solscape itself is so beautiful, with all types of accomodation. We chose to stay in the bach, which has big glass doors that make the most of the view. They are very new and made of sustainable materials, which goes along with the eco vibe of the place. (In fact, just outside was the Solscape vege garden and trampoline!) The bach's aren't huge, but they feel big if you open the doors onto the grass. Beautiful.

Raglan was one of my favorite stops when my boyfriend and I traveled around Australia. Solscape is one of those places you'll tell friends about, as it's likely different from any place you've stayed before. We stayed in one of the larger train cars, which was a great value and gave the two of us plenty of space to hang out.

Pros: Close proximity to the beach, great views and the adorable downtown Ragland
Cons: Lots of bugs (but I guess that should be a given), a bit of a pretentious attitude with some of the people there, but overall very nice feel

Would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: Shoot for the extra $$ and book a bigger train, so you have some privacy.
