This review is solely about the Flax Cove Cottage as we didn't get to see the main farm house. Note that all pics on their website are of the main house & none are of Flax Cove Cottage.
We stayed at the cottage with extended family & it is a good thing we're comfortable with each other as the sleeping arrangements are quite intimate.
There is a queen bed & 3 singles. It's all pretty open-plan with nothing but a curtain separating the queen bed & one of the singles from the kitchen area, where the other 2 singles are located.
The cottage itself is built from a single layer of boards with no insulation such that you can actually see daylight through the cracks between the boards. In summer this might be okay but it would be rather draughty & cold in winter despite the heater which is provided. The night we spent there was cloudless & quite chilly.
The same goes for the bathroom. It's quite large & the toilet is separate from the bath/shower area, which is nice. Otherwise also no insulation. The shower is over the bath, placed quite high up & is not adjustable. I'm 1.6m (+-5' 5") tall & the shower head was another 3/4 of a metre above me. At that height by the time the water from the rain head got down to me it had dispersed quite a bit & rinsing was a bit tricky, trying to find a good stream of water.
In its favour, the place was neat & clean. The queen bed we had was comfortable & sheets were good.
I've given an average rating because what you get doesn't justify the cost.

We had an amzing stay at the farmstay over the waitangi weekend. The property is well looked after and also a little quirky. It has some lovely features, from the unique art work to the lovingly restored floors. Chris is fantastic host, accommodating and friendly. He even dropped off an item we had left in the room on his way to Auckland. Highly recommend this place :)

Chris provides a truly unique experience. Very comfortable, breakfast outstanding, incredible views, interesting people. Evidence of Chris's creative nature is evident throughout the property. Variety of lodging options, some with private bath in the house. We stayed in a family cabin with shared bath which worked well for us (family of three). We chose to interact with others, which we found inspiring. There are nooks and crannies to enjoy more privacy, if desired.

Of the eight places we stayed during our New Zealand visit, this was the most interesting and the most difficult to review. We are two couples who on the last night of our New Zealand holiday picked Raglan Farmstay because of its proximity to Aukland and our flight home the next day. Driving in past the broken down bus and assorted dilapidated caravans brought this couple up a bit short wondering what we had gotten ourselves into. It seems to me that “farmstay bed and breakfast” is a bit of a misnomer since the “farm” seemed to consist of a large vegetable garden and we had to pay for breakfast. In our experience a B&B usually means breakfast is included. To be fair, when we returned home we read all the way to the bottom of the home page, it did state the price of the breakfast which was delicious. The other couple, being more free-spirited (read ex-hippies), was enchanted by the whole experience. To give Chris his due, he is working hard and the accommodations in the main house were clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: Stay in the main house by all means

This is definitely a place to bring different generations and types of people together. The accommodation is as different and varied as its customers. The atmosphere is casual and friendly. Chris, the owner, is a great entertainer and at the same time, knows how to run a business where people of different backgrounds can feel welcome. Our room was spacious and clean and definitely good value for money, as was the breakfast.

We stayed here with a big group for a 10 days new years retreat. Chris gave us a great deal for the long stay and had fantastic rooming accommodation for our varried group - x4 couples and up to 22 people at any one time.
We set up a tent and used the caravan on site also.
The place had a great set up - loved all the trinkets and art in the house. Rooms were fantastic and great having x4 bathrooms and use of x2 fridges for a big group.
We used the spa frequently and lavished in the amazing views.
Everyone had a great time. Set up playing kiwi cricket and also used the barn space as a temporary gym (we took down barbells and weight plates as we a gym event).
The highlight for a lot of us was Janet the goat who was just a darling. We all enjoyed visiting her, sharing plums with her and giving her a scratch under the chin.
We also brought our dog with us on our trip who loved it, the place is not fully fenced but we were prepared with a long line.
Everyone loved that there was no TV, this gave us all a time out from reality to sit back, watch the tide come in and out from the estuary and play board and card games.
An easy walk in and out of the township was great for walking off daily icecreams and watching the sunset from the deck each night made Raglan Farmstay an idilic holiday destination.

Room Tip: If you are hiring out the whole place - the Mountain View room was amazing! However this is the owne...
