“Home away from home”
Reviewed April 29, 2014 via mobile

I stayed here ANZAC weekend with my partner, as a weekend away from Auckland. As a travel agent who specialises in backpacker travel I wanted to stay here. The staff are fantastic - Casey, Aaron and Derek to name a few. They are happy to be there and love to chat to everyone. There is a hot tub which is perfect after a day of surfing, kayaking or paddle boarding - whichever takes your fancy!
The other facilities are great - there's a pizza oven so you can create and cool your own pizza like a pro! And a BBQ for those sausies/steaks etc..
The lounge has a range of books, board games and art materials to keep you occupied.. Since there's no free wifi it's back to actually socialising with other travellers - now isn't that what travelling is all about?! For those who need to touch base back home then there is 2 computers available to use the internet on.

The dorm rooms are small, more like private rooms with 3 or 4 beds, which works really well. Probably the only thing I noticed was people didn't have keys to their rooms but maybe this was just who I spoke to... But it didn't seem to be a problem. Most people at the hostel are there long term anyway, spending weeks or even months surfing. So it's like a big happy family, who all trust each other. Visitors aren't allowed inside if they don't stay there.

The beds are really comfortable, with electric blankets in case it gets cold at night.

The rooms face onto a courtyard but it's quiet after 9pm so no one gets disturbed if you are wanting an early night. But for those party animals there's a club and a couple of bars within walking distance so you can drink/dance the night away!

Guests can use kayaks for free in the estuary behind the hostel, or you can hire ocean kayaks or paddle boards to take further afield.

Overall, I highly rate this hostel. If you're into surfing it's a perfect surf community, and they embrace learners! Other than a drive to bridal veil waterfalls (about 15km away) there's not much else the town offers if you're not into your water sports, but it's still nice for a couple of days. Worth a visit :)

Cheers for having us guys!

Had such a great stay at this laid back hostel with amazing facilities including spa and sauna, bbqs to cook on, 2 well equipped kitchens, free use of water sport gear, friendly and helpful staff. only bummer is having to be quiet after 9.30pm and spa closing at 8.30pm, bit early but nevermind! :D

Loved my night here and wish I could have stayed longer to make the most of the sauna, spa pool, hammocks, kayaks, books in the lounge, barbecue in the courtyard....the list goes on. Very friendly atmosphere and the rooms were great. Thanks!

Raglan Backpackers is definitely one of my favourite hostels in NZ: very clean, nice beds, friendly staff, welcoming atmosphere, great offers such as free kayak boats or fresh eggs :D , perfect location in general :) the surfing introduction was unfortunately too short for me but everything else was nice.

I stayed here as part of the stray bus experience and found it perfect. It is a really chilled out place to be and I was disappointed I was only there for a night which I feel speaks volumes for a hostel!

They offer a bus into the town, and to the beach an is a great place to chill out for a few days.

The rooms are good, too- typically 4 bed dorms an split into female and male however private rooms are also available!

The hostel is clean- bathrooms basic but just what you need and immaculate. Could do with a few more toilets but that's the only drawback I found with it!

Large kitchen with everything you need- great comfy tv room and good choice of films!

Staff were friendly and helpful, too :)

I loved staying here. I think it's one of the best hostels I stayed in. The yard inside is lovely and the hostel itself is not too big. You feel like you are a part of a big family and everybody is super nice!!! The staff is incredible! The hostel offers surf gear which you can rent super cheap, Kayaking and Stand-up paddeling. After you are coming back from a surf session you can relax in the clean spa!!! Just great!!!
