Description: A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.

“Great little find”
Reviewed February 26, 2014

We were in the area and in need of a pub lunch, so we checked on trip advisory and saw the great reviews of this pub, and they weren't wrong!

We did not have a reservation on a busy Sunday afternoon however we sat comfortably at the bar and had our meal. Despite it being rush hour our food came quite quickly. The paprika gnocchi is incredible! and the roast dinner was a high standard and good size.

The young staff we friendly and accommodating.

I am very glad we made this unplanned trip to such a quintessential country pub in such a relaxed and quiet setting!

“Over-rated”
Reviewed February 20, 2014

First impression excellent, lovely part of the country, contrary to expectations. Atmosphere looked good. But oh dear, after promising menu, disappointed to find service extremely slow on top of which - one delightful, smiley waitress, but one who had never been taught to deal pleasantly with customers. Meal mostly good, but don't ask for your lamb pink or you will get the nasty, fatty chewy bits. My husband, who love his mussels, has NEVER had them undercooked before. Should Chef not have come out to apologise, or is he the one resting on his laurels? Must admit smiling one did offer an alternative, but after such a long wait, and because it's not every day you spend £35 a head on LUNCH, we didn't want to further spoil our day out and wait yet more time. Resting on laurels? Love to see the laurels, certainly won't go there again. Have ticked 'family', but we're all four in our sixties!!
