Description: A warm and welcoming country dining pub with open fire and muddy boots and dog friendly. People often describe the Alford as a gastro-pub, but we're not really comfortable with that tag. The term sounds too restauranty and cheffy. We've always wanted the Alford to be a great pub, where you just happen to be able to get great food. So tables in the dining room are available to book, but there's also the bar for drinkers with tables available on a first come, first served basis. The seasonal menu and daily specials balance originality with more traditional fare and we are firm believers in using local produce wherever possible. Hanging baskets and window boxes adorn the terrace and provide an alfresco dining area. Alongside is the village green and historic Ashridge Estate is right on our doorstep. Ramblers, dog walkers, bluebell admirers, mushroom foragers and cyclists regularly emerge from the surrounding countryside ready to combine their activity with a refreshing stop at the Alford Arms.

“Enjoyable visit”
Reviewed February 27, 2013

I explained to a friend that visiting the area would mean a visit to a country pub. My definition of a country pub was a pub with a dog by the fire. Despite it being a freezing cold February evening I was delighted to discover an enormous dog enjoying pride of place by a glowing fire, so my first criteria was met! We had a lovely evening with good service and enjoyable food. I had fish and chips and my fish was cooked to perfection!

“An Enjoyable Experience”
Reviewed February 23, 2013

This was our first visit to The Alford Arms as recommended in Dog Friendly Magazine, although we did not have our dog with us. We visited with friends on a Friday and I did book a table for lunch in the restaurant which was just as well as arriving at 12.30 p.m. there was only one table in the bar left and this was occupied almost immediately. The restaurant was also very busy. The bar area is not large but very cosy. The staff were excellent, very friendly and helpful. The menu was a step up from the normal "pub" food and had a very good selection with some tempting specials. This was reflected in the price but you get what you pay for and all four of us thoroughly enjoyed our meal which was well presented and cooked to perfection.
We will certainly be visiting again, probably with our dog as this eating house is very convenient for walks on the Asridge Estate. (Dogs are allowed in the bar but not the restaurant).
As this pub is one of four in a chain we are looking forward to trying their sister establishments.

“Warm atmosphere”
Reviewed February 22, 2013

Very friendly, charming pub with excellent quality food which is a bit more expensive than usual pub food, but, generally worth it. If you want to eat in the restaurant then you will need to book, otherwise you have to wait for a table in the pub, or, you can opt to eat outside weather permitting! Dog friendly too1

“Another excellent meal in Frithsden”
Reviewed February 9, 2013

We went to the Alford Arms again for lunch and it was as fabulous as we remembered it. The menu changes regularly here but the food is consistently good and the staff are accommodating. They do small plates and big plates here so you can mix and match starters and mains. The bubble & squeak is great as a starter and I had the baked sea bass with cherry tomatoes which was cooked perfectly. Also recommend the pork belly. Coffee is served with a shot glass full of maltesers which is a nice touch. You are allowed to take dogs to the bar o outside seating areas as well which is useful as you can eat there, but reservations are only for the restaurant

“food great - service poor”

shame that this lovely restaurant lets itself down with its indifferent 'service without a smile or pleasant word or thankyou' - last time i visit.
