“Don't miss the boat”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

A bit quiet for a Friday lunchtime, but the beers, location and food make this well worth a visit. Service excellent. The menu varies from trad to gastro and there are cheap options.

“A warm welcome on a cold day”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 19, 2013

Visited with 7 others from my rambling club before starting our walk, well actually after a short walk along the canal towpath from the station. Pleasant setting near locks and nice to see a few boats actually moving about. The fire was burning brightly in the fireplace which was a cheering sight. 3 real ales for those who like them and a menu to suit all tastes and appetites, if not the cheapest. Veggies well catered for too. I had the pork chop with mash and grainy mustard plus red cabbage - tasty! The staff were very young but really lovely: checked whether we wanted the meals brought out together or as they came (some of us had starters only and the rest mains only), and even - without us asking - explained that they'd called out an electrician to look at the flickery lights. None of us are local but I'd recommend the pub to anyone.

“Warm welcome and good food”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 30, 2012 via mobile

On a cold Sunday we received a warm welcome on arrival at the Boat. The menu caters for all tastes light bites throughout to full dishes - all were excellent and well presented.
Portions are generous and you would need a large appetite to manage more than one course. Our group of six enjoyed the shared fish platter, a large bowl of soup, a burger, baked potato with chilli and the pork rillette - all excellent. Service was friendly and the location beside the canal would be delightful in the summer.

“Nothing better than to sit out on the patio along side the Grand Union and let time pass you by...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

A great pub with great food, good ale and a real friendly atmosphere. I base this review on several visits undertaken while meeting with friends in Berhamsted. A Fullers pub with a good selection of their regular and seasonal ales, always kept in tip top condition. Very nice decor that gives off a warm, cosy feeling all year round. Great, friendly service from all the staff, the landlady and always a friendly local available for a chat. The food is very good, with a nice varied menu; a definite notch or two above pub grub. It is a pub, therefore expect the TV to be on if there is live footie or a major sporting event on and a crowd enjoying themselves. In the fine weather there is nothing better than to sit out on the patio along side the Grand Union and let time pass you by with great food and a lovely pint.
