different food from your normal Indian, have read that it was because the chef is Indian rather than Bangladeshi , had a good night, only complaint was the wilted flower on the table which they removed, was hoping they would put a good one on the table as we went as a couple

The restaurant is a little outside the bulk of the restaurants in the town centre, but the Verandah makes up for that in every other way.

Welcoming staff, great food, great decor, great everything. Have never had a bad meal here.

Looking forward to eating many more meals here in the future.

We were regulars at another popular Indian restaurant in Berkhamsted until we moved to the other end of town and began to order our take aways from Verandah. The first few occasions were without incidence and we thoroughly enjoyed the food. However our most recent experiences have been terrible, so much so that we felt - regretfully - it necessary to write this review.

About a month ago we ordered a takeaway, we were told it would be approx 25 minutes but 45 minutes later it still hadn't arrived. When we called to chase it up we were informed that it was on it's way. It arrived shortly after however we can only suspect that it had accompanied the driver on his rounds for some time as it was stone cold when we opened it. It was also without a main course. We contacted the restaurant again and were told that a replacement main course would be sent - it was, but by the this time it reached us it was after 10 o'clock in the evening, about an hour and a half after we'd placed the original order.

As we're quite accepting that mistakes happen we did order our next takeaway from Verandah again, but with caution - my husband spoke to the manager who reassured him there wouldn't be any error with our order, he in fact took the order himself which arrived promptly… but without our rice. We spoke with the delivery driver who was still in the drive, he was rude and confrontational, stating that it was our own mistake and we obviously didn't order any. My husband called the restaurant and was informed by the manager who took the order that he had not ordered rice. The was little in the way of any apology and to attempt to rectify the situation despite the fact that both my husband and I could categorically state that the order had been placed in full.

We haven't eaten in the restaurant for many years so are unable to comment on the face to face service, but given our recent experiences over the phone, with the delivery driver and also the manager, it is with regret that we certainly won't be ordering our takeaway from what is the closest Indian restaurant to us - instead we will be returning to what proved to be a very friendly, reliable and consistent restaurant at the other end of town.

We visited this restaurant on the strength of TA reviews and were very surprised at how good it is. Our only question is how have we missed it when we've been eating in Berkhamsted for so many years?! As with many of our reviews, we would like to have given it a 3.5 rather than a 4, but opted for the higher rating as we've eaten here a couple of times now and enjoyed our food both times.

The restaurant is a good size without being huge, although it did feel a little chilly during the recent cold weather and could do with some more heating. The staff seem genuinely warm and welcoming, but don't hassle you during the meal which we really appreciate.

The menu is quite large, and there are some slightly different dishes to the 'normal' Indian food on it. We've tried a few dishes including a couple of their prawn mains which were really tasty and well cooked as was the chicken dhansak, rice, veggies and naan. We've often found that the wine isn't too good in High Street Indian restaurants, but the house wine's are very drinkable in Verandah! The only complaint we had about one of our meals was that the poppadums were a bit stale.

We will definitely go back to Verandah!

Hubby and I have been visiting this restaurant for several years now, usually once a week or so. The service has always been excellent and the food consistently tasty and filling with a varied menu. Trouble is, it seems that others have caught on to how good this place is and its becoming harder to get a table on a Friday or Saturday night !!
Don't worry we'll keep on trying....
