Our one-night stay at El Guacamayo was only a tease, and we are already making plans to return! This as yet undiscovered Jungle Camp provides an authentic camping experience along with some of the comforts that many of us have learned to enjoy! The four cabana rooms are brand new, and they are kept spotlessly clean. The meals are prepared in typical Belizean style, and our only complaint was that they served us too much food! Special requests are not a problem, and Larry, the owner, was very attentive to all the details that made our stay perfect.! El Guacamayo is located on top of an unexcavated Mayan ruin, so you will be sleeping on the plaza level of the same sort you see in Tikal and Caracol! The sunsets, the stars, and the deep silence will touch you in a very visceral way. There are no mosquitos, and the breezes make sleeping outside ideal. There are 500 bird species in Belize, and I think we saw most of them at El Guacamayo! This Camp is managed in partnership with David's Adventure Tours, which is one of the oldest and most respected guide services in San Ignacio. On past trips we have enjoyed visits to Caracol, Rio On Pools, and Barton Creek. There is only one downside to this Camp: The only access is across the Mopan River in a canoe, and then you need to climb 63 sandstone stairs! This lodging is not suitable for people who are alter-abled. But if you enjoy adventure travel in Central America, and you can climb around the Mayan ruins, these stairs will not be a problem for you. For us, the river crossing and the stairs just added to the entire exotic experience!
