Our family spent a week here last month - and having stayed at a different Como hotel last year we knew we were in for a treat - but Maalifushi still totally exceeded all our expectations. Maalifushi is the only resort in the Thaa Atoll which makes it feel wonderfully remote and private. From the moment we landed in Male and were accompanied through to the domestic terminal to catch the Maldivian Air flight that was waiting for us, to the day we left we were looked after so well. Without exception the staff were friendly, professional, keen to talk about the island and the hotel and seemed proud to be able to show off this beautiful area of the Maldives. Haroon (our butler) deserves a special mention – we felt totally spoilt by him and we all still miss him! He even came to the airport to wave our flight off! Karina and the dive centre team were great fun and kitted us all out with the latest snorkelling and dive gear. Francesco the Marine Biologist came with us on all the snorkelling trips we did and guided us around the reef. Two of us did the Discover Scuba course with Andy which was really worth doing. As part of our family package we had a few excursions included – snorkelling with turtles, sunset dolphin cruise (must have seen over 100 dolphins – very special) and a Robinson Crusoe style picnic – all of which we really enjoyed. The accommodation in our over water villa was superb – we enjoyed the privacy of our villa, our own large plunge pool and steps down into the sea for swimming and snorkelling. We often had lunch at the villa too. Early mornings were spent watching fish and the occasional sting ray and reef shark swim past the villa whilst the sun came up. The food at Maalifushi was exceptional. Every meal we had was wonderful – we enjoyed the Tai Restaurant and the main restaurant. Breakfast was a delicious help yourself buffet with fresh fruits, smoothies, pastries and also the option to order from the menu too – pancakes with coconut, waffles with mango sauce, eggs benedict etc. Pre-dinner cocktails at both bars was fun and on one evening before dinner we enjoyed a film and talk by Karina and Francesco about the marine life. I had an excellent Shambala massage and tried out the air-conditioned gym too. It is easy to walk everywhere as its not a huge island but on the days we were feeling particularly lazy Haroon would 'buggy' us back to our villa! The walk to breakfast is lovely – a wide path with lush vegetation - plants, flowers and palm trees. The kitchen gardens are worth a look at too. I would recommend taking one of the 'packages' that is offered – it is The Maldives and therefore food is a little more pricey so we enjoyed knowing that our meals and excursions were included. We hope to come back in a few years time – thank you to Andrew and all the team for a fabulous holiday and keep doing what you are doing!
