IORA - The Retreat,Kaziranga
Certificate of Excellence

We visited Kaziranga on the 29th and 30th of April and stayed at the iora. The resort is simply superb. we just did the elephant safari on day one and stay put the whole of the second day in the resort. We took the supreme room and it was a paradise for people who love wood. The bathroom could have been more luxurious. Compared to the rest of the facitlities of the resort, the bathroom's just about average. They have maintained the lawns and the gardens beautifully well. The breakfast buffet is ordinary and their indian food on their menu is ok. But Bhaatban their assamese cuisine is outta this world. For someone like me wh loves his pork, it is easily among the best pork that i've had. Their Spa is just ordinary, we've booked head massage on the first day and found it too ordinary so changed our plans of spa treatement the next day. We also checked out the GL and the grasslands resorts on our way. They are pretty decent for the rent they charge. But if ur looking for luxury in wilderness, Iora is the place.

Room Tip: If ur goin there as family of 3/ 4 you could probably take the supreme room since they dun charge fo...

We visited in Apr '12 & stayed fr 2 nights @ IORA.

Rooms were very clean & well appointed. No in-room safe, toiletries were local brands so preferably take your own, 2 ltrs of mineral water is provided in room complimentary. Resort restaurant served very good Indian food, Chinese was also decent however not as good as Indian. They also have an Assamese restaurant which we didn't try as it was totally empty. We had B'fast included in package & there were many good options in B'fast. Liked the coconut croissants. They offer packed B'fast in case you're out on an excursion during B'fast timing. You need to tell the main restaurant staff an evening before if you're planning to leave early. When booking room, rqst fr a hill facing room, pool view is not worth it. Elephant safaris are booked thru the reception the previous evening, make bookings ahead if possible as space can be limited, Elephant safari provides a very close sighting of Rhinos. Liked the jeep safari also, we did the Western & Eastern range in jeep safari & Central range on elephant safari. Take a light meal before going on any excursion as ride can be very bumpy.

Staff are very friendly (a small handicap of English in some cases) however this is compensated very well by their positive approach & genuine desire to serve the customers.

There's a driver's dormitory which the reception will assist with (@ INR 200 per room night).

Room Tip: Ask for hill facing room

Just perfect in all respect.
IORA provides perfect arrangements for Jeep Safari, as well as Elephant Safari at Kaziranga National Park.
Love to be there again in the next visit.

Room Tip: Super-deluxe rooms are best for family.

As is aptly named, it is indeed a resort located amidst sprawling lawns and flowers in full bloom. The rooms are spacious and well furnished. The room service is commendable and the staff extremely polite. I wish the same could be said about the front desk staff at the reception. Their intention may be to appear polite but somehow the sincerity does not come through in their conversation. The attached restaurant has a delectable menu and the bar is adequately stocked. It has spacious lawns for spirited gatherings in the late evening.

We stayed there from 13th to 14th January 2012. It is very near to the Central Range of the Kaziranga National Park i.e. Kohora Range.

The rooms are really well appointed with good house keeping staff and really excellent food.

We stayed in Luxury Room which comes with complimentary breakfast and his is really elaborate - from continental to north Indian to south Indian.

The hotel management arranges bon fire in the evening and we found that as a common practice in all such properties there.

On an overall assessment, this is surely a place I would recommend for a stay.

Room Tip: All rooms are well placed, however, selecting one that faces the greenery from both ends would help...

The stay at IORA was very pleasant. The place is landscaped beautifully with a lot of green and colorful flowers. The rooms are comfortable. They have in-house staff staying in the hotel basement or in the adjoining quarters who are very prompt in their service. Booking the reservation did take some calling and emailing on my part but other wise their front desk staff were very helpful.

Our pick up and safaris were arranged professionally. Apart from the common elephant and jeep safaris, we also did a 3 hour trek (arranged by IORA) at the Burapahar range. The best part was when we crossed the jungle and went on to the sandy plains of the Brahmaputra river. We saw footprints of the elusive wild cats. Gibbons were aplenty and we got a nice feel of walking through the jungle.

Loved the food at the Assamese restaurant, Bhatbaan. Had chicken and bamboo shoot cooked in a bamboo sleeve over charcoal fire (Bahor Sungat Dia Bahgaj Aru Gahori) with rice and also ordered a catfish cooked in peppery sauce as a side dish. Was yum! My wife is a vegetarian and did not have too many options. So it was a one time visit for us. The rest of our food was at their other multi-cuisine restaurant. We also tried the famed north east chilli vodka (not listed on the menu but read about it online) at their bar and found it okay.

We met a local on a post lunch walk outside the resort. We saw many other places along the way but none really stood out. We realized and also heard from the local that IORA is a high end and expensive resort for the region.

Overall we loved the place and would definitely recommend it.

My second trip to kaziranga with my family. First trip stayed in a govt run resort..Aranya i think...horrible! Iora is a really good resort..kids enjoyed the beautifully maintained garden and the food is delicious. Planning a trip again in summer to enjoy the swimming pool. Have a gripe about the game room. It was in a bad condition, mattresses lying around, broken rackets etc. Hope they fix that.
