I am vacilating between a 3/5 and 4/5 for the Basant because it is definitely above average for the budget hotel category. I had a single room for 350R per night which is outstanding given that the hotel is clean and the room was fairly well equiped. The hotel is conveniently located in the central market area. The scene was set with a very clean stairway up to the reception area on the first floor - something which immediately set it apart from most other budget places. The hallway smelled good too. The room had a small single bed with good clean linen, towel, soap and toilet paper plus TV and a couple of fans. There was a good, cold water-only shower. The receptionist spoke enough English to understand and be helpful.
There is an upstairs restaurant that I did not use. There are also several restaurants within a block or 2 of the Basant.
The only thing that I disliked was the smell of naphthalene from the mothball things placed in each of the drain outlets. I think I prefer the small of bad drains to that cloying chemical smell.
The Basant is very popular, probably because it is such a good budget option. I had made a reservation the day before which was a good thing because it was booked out when I arrived in mid-afternoon. This hotel is recommended for those on a budget who also want to be centrally located.
