We returned on 21 March 2013 from a wonderful 4 night holiday at the Davvi Artic Lodge. We were very pleased that we had paid extra to stay there. Before we went away any queries were answered by the Transun admin team and information came exactly on time. The staff both at the hotel and on the activities were really good. The only mistake was that we booked for 4 nights and wished we had booked for 7.

Plus points:

The thermal suits and boots were excellent. We found the liners in the boots could be taken out and dried on the radiator.

The hotel was warm and comfortable with views into the distance from the dining room.

The food is a buffet service. There was plenty so no fear of going hungry. Remember, the hotel is a 2 hour drive to the nearest town and well within the Artic Circle so fresh fruit and veg aren't available.

Staff (Transun, hotel, drivers and on the activities) were so helpful – particularly our last activity, a snowshoe walk, when Joe and Joe made this into a real fun afternoon. Mandy and Corinna, the reps, were a font of knowledge. Our activities were spread evenly across our stay and information was readily available and easy to understand.

The activities were very well organised and extremely enjoyable, particularly the husky ride and snowshoe walk.

Points for thought:

More information is needed about what clothing people need to take – a pair of very warm mittens/gloves plus a liner pair to wear at the same time/several pairs of socks worn at the same time in the thermal boots/a very warm hat or 2 hats/neckwarmer or wide scarf to cover the nose and mouth when on the snowmobile.

A system for letting guests know when the Northern Lights were out. It was disappointing as there was no system and depended entirely on word of mouth from other guests although there was a daily weather and northern lights forecast on a notice board; perhaps a buzzer system in each room which guests could opt out of if they wanted to.

The activities were so good and enjoyable however leaving at 10.45 pm for a 2 and a half hour snowmobile trip is too late. Our snowmobile didn’t have a cowling so there was no protection from the wind and the temperature of almost -25 degrees left my husband, the driver, with the start of frostbite on his accelerator thumb but he was wearing only 1 pair of walking mittens. However it was a great experience as we stopped on a frozen lake and watched the Northern Lights.

We would be happy to go on this holiday again if any of our friends wished to go.

Davvi Lodge Hotel 17 to 24 March 2013. Always wanted to see the Northern Lights and we did! They showed themselves 5 nights out of seven and varied in intensity. Tuesday night was the best. Words cannot describe it. Awsome. 'I will never look at the night sky in the same light again.' We stayed in the hotel, room was basic but warm. Plenty of hot water. All activities were great fun and well organized. Loved the huskies, reindeer rides and snowmobiles. Snowshoe walk was great. Irish Joe made it such fun. Staff were so friendly and helpful. Ours was the week the chef walked out. The food was fine for the first 3 days(we read the reviews, so knew it was basic, but then we did not go there for the food) the rest of the week was dismal, but heyho, we survived. We had fantastic experiences and memories to last a life time. We also went to the Moose Farm and the Ice Hotel. Not with Transun/Santa Safaris, but with Tony, who can be found in the Swedish Tourist information, just across the bridge. We were lucky, that Tony had the day off and we had no activities, so he agreed to take us for a lot less than £400. It was certainly worth it. The Ice Hotel is fantastic. The carvings are just out of this world. Go if you can. The moose are huge and very friendly, especially if you have bananas to feed them! The extra trips as pretty expensive, which is a shame as I am sure they are great experiences. We had seven included in our holiday. The Ice Castle you will see on one of the trips is nothing compared to the Ice Hotel, not in the same league! The Davvi hotel is in a lovely spot with great views from the dining room. The woods behind the hotel are a winter wonderland. Loved it!

3 of us stayed for 3 nights at the Davvi Arctic lodge in one of the cabins. It was convientely located to the hotel and the best part about it was the sauna! Just what you need after coming back at night after seeing the lights in -17C! We were lucky enough to see the northern lights on 2 of the 3 nights which felt really good as this was the main goal of the trip! The lights themselves were awesome..they keep you guessing where they will appear next! When they were out, everyone got very excited;people had been waiting for days to see them. Its a special feeling to see them and definitely worth bearing the cold! Apart from the lights, there's loads of fantastic activities to keep you busy during the day time; husky riding was my favorite, but other activities to recommend are the northern lights snowmobile safari, snowshoe introduction and a a trip to see the world famous ice hotel in Sweden and Moose Farm. The ice hotel is made entirely of ice and gets rebuilt every year. Has different themed rooms such as flowers, dragons and space.A cool experience! A few negatives about the trip; food options are not so exciting, outbound flight was delayed for over an hour for some paperwork reasons and organisation of our activities was messed upon arrival. Apart from that, we had a brilliant time and would definitively recommend it!

Went for 4 nights on 10th March. Flight good and transfer good. Met at the hotel by very friendly people and the organizasion of the various activities was very good. The hotel was ok but very tired. We stayed in a cabin which was very, basic but clean and warm. BUT, oh, the food. It was DISGUSTING. only one word to describe it, SLOP. There was no choice. Potato was instant. By the end of the holiday we were all veggies as there was no meat or fish to speak of. Sweet was always a dry bit of cake. It was disgusting and we felt really ripped of by the hotel as we had paid a lot of money for the holiday. There is a garage 2 minutes walk from the hotel. The food there was great. After all this we didn't see the lights but we did have a good break.

We have just returned from a 4 night holiday at the Davvi. The overall experience was fantastic. The hotel was warm and functional and provided an excellent base for the various activities and excursions. The activities were extremely well organised and those leading the activities made special efforts to make sure that nobody was excluded, for example by making alternative arrangements for children too young to ride on a snowmobile. Staff at the hotel were without exception very friendly and helpful and responded promptly to requests made of them. The food at the hotel did leave a bit to be desired: it was not always hot and many of the dishes tasted a bit insipid. However, for us, the excellent activities such as husky ride, reindeer farm, snowshoe walking and snowmobile safari more than compensated. The "icing on the cake" was going on the walk on our last evening to the top of the local fell and being treated to a superb view of the Northern Lights!!!

Our family of 4 (with 2 boys – 11 & 13) went for 4 nights returning March 28th and absolutely loved it! None of us have ever been on a holiday like this before!! The flights with Enter Air were fine, as were the transfers from/to the airport on arrival and departure days. The Davvi Arctic Lodge is a lovely little hotel in a beautiful setting and all the staff we met there were genuinely friendly and helpful . We stayed in a Fell House, which was basic but clean, warm & spacious and a short walk through the forest to the main hotel. (Our luggage was dropped off and collected, which was much appreciated.) As recommended by other reviewers, we took a travel kettle and snacks for lunch times and the hotel staff were happy to lend us glasses and mugs. We had no complaints about the food at all – buffet style, hearty, warm and plentiful – all you could ask for after a day’s adventuring! Half-board was sufficient as breakfast & evening meal set us up with just a snack for lunch each day. The snow suits and boots provided were fantastic – really warm and cosy and essential for being out in the cold all day (and some of the night!)
The trips included in the package were all fantastic, well organised and on time – The Reindeer Camp, Husky Ride, Evening Snowmobile Trip and Snow Shoe walk – great fun! On all the trips we found the guides to be excellent, knowledgeable and genuinely concerned with everybody getting the most out of the experiences. (Special praise for Boy Joe, Owen & James in particular.) They were absolutely brilliant with our boys and great fun to be with! Unfortunately, the boys were not old enough to go on the evening snowmobile trip as they were under 16, but we were extremely grateful to Rick and his team who went out of their way to organise a special Family Sleigh & Snowmobile safari for our family and another the next day, so that they didn’t miss out. It seemed to us that all the staff worked hard and long hours, but were very committed. Some guests moved some of their trips to different days/times and added extra trips too, so it must have been quite a feat of organisation to ensure that everybody got to do what they wanted, when they wanted.
The only challenging aspect of the trip was the timing. At this time of year, with the nights drawing out, we were advised that the most likely time to see the Lights was between 1 & 1.30am. Every evening we would walk 10-15 minutes to the top of the hill behind the hotel in the moonlight, which was magical in itself and join fellow guests star gazing until the early hours. The times of some of our trips though meant being up by 6 or 7am. This was particularly difficult for the kids after very late nights, (although they coped admirably) and meant we then had to nap in the afternoons when we had the chance. I don’t know whether this could have been organised differently. If you are going mainly for the Lights at this time of year, then taking younger children might be difficult.
The walk across the bridge into Sweden and Karesuando was a lovely afternoon spent – and being an hour behind Finnish time, there are not many people who can say that they have walked between 2 different time zones!
We were lucky enough to see the Lights on our last night – and they were well worth the wait, lasting over 5 hours in total and filling the sky with swirls, colours, curtains, arcs & other patterns – truly breathtaking and humbling!
On the final morning, whilst waiting for the coach we walked down to the ‘Art Gallery & Mini-Zoo’ next door to the hotel, run by Katja Saljas and her family (http://katjasaljas.nettisivu.org/ ). This was a really interesting insight into how the locals really live (and some cute pets!).
The holiday was not cheap, but probably the holiday of our lifetime (so far) and it’s difficult to fault any of the organisers. We would certainly consider returning at some point in the future – and will never forget the few days we spent there.

Room Tip: Fell Houses are good for families - but not if you struggle with the walk back to the hotel.

We went to the Davvi Lodge 3rd March for 7 nights and had a fantastic time, we arrived a bit later than expected but everything just popped into place and we soon had our thermal suits and a meal very quickly after arriving, very organised, once we had the arrival meeting we got on our thermal suits, which are absolutely excellent, and started to walk up the hill behind the apartments to find the northern lights, we were very lucky that on the first night we managed to see them and thought that we were so lucky, night after night we managed to see the northern lights, 6 out of 7 nights. The Wednesday night was by far the best night to see the different colours, pinks / greens / blues, it was fantastic, with Saturday night one of the best to see the lights dancing, we just started to walk back to the apartments to warm up a bit when out it came, it was brilliant to see the movement of the lights, everyone just stopped in there tracks and just stared at the sky, it was truly amazing.

Regarding the food, it was all very good.
Breakfast was cereals / fruit / toast / boiled eggs / scrambled eggs / sausages / beans and sometimes bacon.
Evening meal we had soup every night which was very nice, then for the main course you could have a choice of meats, chicken / pork / steak, with rice / veg / potatoes, all really nice, one night we had chilli which again was excellent.

Regarding the staff, again all really good and always there to help and answer questions, waiting staff were excellent, always cleaning tables and making it look very nice all the time, and for the activity staff instructors they were also always polite and helpful with luggage / transporting from activities / answering questions / and great at taking the activities, we had a great time on the sledges with the reindeer and huskies, excellent time on the snowmobiles which again the staff were excellent.

Day time we had a really nice time with the sledges that you could hire, great fun going down the hills, and if you wanted a really fast run then the road leading up to the top of the hill was a really good run, try to keep this one a secret though, and also look out for any vehicles that might come up the road, doesn't happen very often, snow shoes were also a great laugh, falling in the snow and trekking through the woods was a excellent activity and was great for all ages, and again the instructor was really good to take a different path every time through the woods.

All in all I would recommend this trip to anyone, staff excellent, food very good, activities great fun, the only thing you can't guarantee is the northern lights, but we were very lucky to see them 6 out of the 7 nights.

Thank you to everyone at the Davvi Lodge for making our holiday a very enjoyable experience.
