Duration of stay: 2 nights (9-11 August)

Booking process and check-in/check-out: we booked a room for three people directly with the owners . We had found out the e-mail address from some websites, but it is still unclear to me if the Kandyan Manor has its own website. Because of the rating on TA, good internet marketing is perhaps not essential to get bookings, but it might be worth looking into. E-mails were answered quickly and efficiently . Check in was friendly, check out as well. Of course the Manor also proved hard to find (there are no signs), but our driver phoned to get instructions.

Room: our room inside the house was very spacious, the bathroom was big. Shower with electric heater was sufficient. Wifi was okay outside on the porch. No aircon, but ceiling fans were certainly enough for us. We would recommend some better locks on the door of the rooms. All the rooms in the house come out in the common living room and we did see some open doors during our stay. We did come back from our day’s sightseeing to an unmade room, which surprised us a bit, as there are not many rooms in the house. As it was already late in the afternoon and we were leaving the next day, we did not mention this at the time.

Facilities: Garden is the main facility we used. Nice to be able to sit there or on the porch, after the hectic Kandy in the run up to the Perahera.

Restaurant/meals: We had dinner twice at the house. Very well nicely prepared dinners. We particulary enjoyed being able to eat outside. Breakfast seemed to be Sri Lankan/Western alternately. It would have been nice to have know that in advance though. We do enjoy Asian meals, but not particularly in the morning.

Other remarks/Conclusion: We had a nice stay at the Kandyan Manor . Perhaps it would be an idea to provide some information on the house in the rooms or on the porch for visitors to read. The house clearly has a large history (so we had learned from the Internet), but during our stay for owners were far too busy to have a long chat.

A perfectly kept old house near Kandy. It was a real pleasure to stay here. We felt very welcome with the family, enjoyed the food and the surroundings of the manor. From the breakfast on the veranda to the real Sri Lankan dinner, it was a really relaxing and homely feel. There is a tuktuk available if you want to visit Kandy. Recommended!

I find it hard to write this review as I experienced good and not so good. We are an older couple and when we booked through Agoda we had no opportunity to communicate with the hosts. The good - very good - was the pleasantness and helpfulness of the hosts, the fabulous food cooked by Suzy ( allowing for us being vegetarian) and the pleasant old home and lovely garden that have been in the family for generations. It is quite a way from town and Tuk-tuk drivers did not know where it was - one trip took almost 1 1/2 hours when the driver started off the wrong way. One previous tripadvisor review mentioned 6 acres of grounds which interested us to spend time in, but there is actually only a very small garden. We were given "the chalet" as it was called, as our room. This is a small home-built concrete hut, very basic in every way and not really comfortable to sleep in or spend any time in. It was not particularly clean. The rooms in the house seemed to be quite large and clean. We were disappointed after seeing the high rating given by others and I hesitated between 3 and 4 rating.

Room Tip: Avoid the "chalet"! Others seemed Ok.

We stayed here in March 2013 in one of the mud huts. I absolutely loved it. It is extremely rustic and there is no place to put your things (I was fine just leaving them in a suitcase on the floor but this might bother some people), and the inside is extremely charming and romantic. Two small suggestions for the mud hut - put a divider (even just a curtain) between the bedroom and the bathroom. Not everyone wants to be seen on the toilet, even by their significant other! Secondly, a fan in the mud hut would be an excellent addition. I was fine to sleep at night but my boyfriend was melting. Only one actual complaint - please kill that rooster! He woke me up every morning and I was nearly ready to strangle him myself! Also there were some construction noises but I assume they should have finished by now. To nearly make up for it, the grounds are absolutely beautiful.

The couple who run the place are warm, helpful, and just overall quite lovely. It's a bit outside Kandy but it's not far and it was preferably to staying in the city and as the hotel has a tuktuk it's no problem to get there. We ate breakfast and, most days dinner - the food is pretty good, but I think they (sadly) tone down the spice for their guests. Not the most authentic that we had during our stay, but good nonetheless. I definitely recommend this place, and go for the mud hut if you are feeling adventurous.

Room Tip: Pick the mud hut - it's fun!

Unique and quiet place in the hills surrounding to Kandy. You feel like you're in the middle of the jungle, whilst being very close to town. We had the 'mud hut bungalow' for two nights, which are absolutely fabulous. Staff was very welcoming and helpful with planning/arranging nice trips and site visits. Definitely recommend to stay here when in Kandy.
