Mounu Island Resort....... just to write the words brings a feeling of peace and tranquillity, love and sheer joy. I have stayed now three years running on this wonderful island, always in Sept/October from 2004 to 2006 inclusive. You know, in this life you get back what you are prepared to put in. Treat the owners as friends with myriads of interesting stories to tell of life in Tonga with the wonderful Tongan people, and you will have long evenings of such fun and humour and laughter. Stay naked near your fale and they will leave you alone to chill and do your own thing.
Other reviews indicate the incredible beauty of this island, and the snorkeling, swimming and kayaking from its shore. All wonderful. Ask Allan to organise you a trip to Church.... an outstanding highlight for me on my second year there. My purpose in being there is to experience something which marks me out from anyone else I know, certainly in the UK. I have been each year swimming with the magnificent humpback whales which breed and give birth in these waters. Allan and his funloving but caring and concerned staff will ensure that you have a wonderful, safe and happy experience.
Accommodation? For goodness sake this is a tiny island in the South Pacific. Their ecological sewerage systems put to shame many seen in other parts of the world. Facilities are basic, but are scrupulously clean and are infinitely better than the one other experience I have had of a few days on another island..... where three of us shared a room with a visible loo!!
Food? Breakfast - superb, and often made to order, whether you want full English, pancakes or whatever. Accompanied by all the usual hotel trimmings, you couldn't wish for better. Dinner - varied usually, one year rather too much fish for my taste, but varied in presentation and accompaning ingredients. Always plenty of fruit, fresh ingredients and well cooked, well presented and ample portions. Lunch for me usually consisted of a packed meal on the boat - welcome after a few hours whale hunting and swimming!
I just can't wait to get back.
Oh, and just a "by the way". Last year I came home via New York on the Queen Mary II. Now if you REALLY want a scare story!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We are planning our third trip to Mounu Island Resort for September 2006. We have spent about two weeks on the island each of the last two whale seasons (first in September 2004, then October 2005). The resort met all our expectations of the perfect vacation.

Allan, Lyn, Kirsty and Jason have done a wonderful job of creating an eco-friendly resort on this gem of an island. The four fales (cottages) for guests are built in the traditional Tongan style and have composting toilets, solar powered lights, instant hot water heaters for showers, and comfortable mattresses with mosquito netting. The family pets make it feel like home.

We liked coming to dinner and being served without having to choose from a menu. Lyn and Kirsty were able to work around my somewhat quirky diet; the food was delicious. Breakfast choices were perfect and we got a box lunch for the whale watching trips.

Allan runs the best whale watch business in Vava’u. The first year we elected to go out most days, but now we go out everyday we can. Afternoons are free for swimming, reading, resting, and visiting.

A special pleasure is meeting other guests from many countries that have found this unique place. Another is listening to Allan’s stories about his experiences in Tonga. We like that the island is remote and that the accommodations are comfortable and rustic. We look forward to our return all year.

We stayed at Mounu in late November 2005 and we had great time! We were there on our Honeymoon and this place is ideal if you are looking for peace and total relax, as there’s nothing, only beaches, spectacular sea and a lot of peace. The island is quite small, you only need 1 hour to snorkel around it but the feeling of paradise you have there is really special. There are 4 “fale” rooms and the maximum of people there can be 8 (plus the owners). We stayed in the “Honeymoon Fale”, which is very very nice.
Everything is calm and nice: the beach, the sea, the nature around, no noises and no people on the beach next to you!!! We spent our days relaxing on the beach, in the sun, snorkeling….as the coral reef around is very rich: just let the owners tell you about the tide!!!
I do not know how I can tell more about the days spent there as it was a piece of paradise for us!
Allan, the owner, and the whole family are very nice and discreet: they are there, but you can see them only at eating time! You feel like the king of the little island.
It is possible to use kayaks, masks and snorkels to explore around ….and it’s worthy!
If you come here from July to October you can also go for whale watching, Allan will take you directly with his boat and the experience is really great as you could even swim with whales!!!
In my opinion, if you plan a trip to the Pacific Ocean, you should really think about going to Mounu Island Resort, a real piece of paradise!

We stayed at Mounun for a week and were the only guests on the island. This is one of those places that you dream about - an idyllic tropical island with beautiful beaches and nothing to disturb you but the sounds of nature. If you're looking for somewhere where you can be totally alone on your own lovely private beach, this is the place.
However, the resort itself leaves a lot to be desired.
There are just four little cottages on the island (which is only 6 1/2 acres), all well separated. One is called a honeymoon bure and we were very glad to stay there as although it was basic it was fairly modern and of a decent size. We would NOT recommend the other three as they were tiny, looked old and dirty and for the prices they charge not really acceptable.
And I guess that sums up our feeling about Mounu - it simply isn't worth the money. We found the attitude of the owners quite strange, as if they actually would rather we weren't there. For US$75 per person per day the food was a ripoff - meals were small, repetitive, basic and bland and there was never any offer of any extra snacks during the day. When we arrived early afternoon there was no offer of lunch or afternoon tea. We were often hungry and certainly didn't feel pampered which is what you would expect for the prices.
It felt to us the owners had created their own piece of paradise but were not keen on going to extra mile to make it special for their guests. Indeed it felt they would really rather not be bothered. The tired, basic faciltiies, poor food and indifference of the owners let down badly what could be a sensational place.
This IS Tonga, and we aware that it is difficult to provide superior amenities and food. But frankly the owners didn't really put in much effort and the prices simply aren't justified.
If you're looking for somewhere to truly get away from people and spend all day naked on your own private beach with not a soul in sight, this is a great place. But expect to pay over the top for it, make sure you take extra food, and be prepared for poor and indifferent service from the owners (the other staff were lovely, by the way). Oh, and make sure you book the honeymoon bure.

We really enjoyed Mounu Island, where we spent 4 nights in August 2004.
It is a really beautiful, private escape for couples willing to rough it a bit for the sake of location. There are only three bungalows, spaced well apart. They are really cute but rustic, no glass in the windows, heaps of mosquitos but comfortable and with hot water.

There is decent snorkelling right off the island, and whales come very close in season - you can even hear them when you are snorkelling. A whale watch service runs from the island, snorkelling with humpback whales was a truly amazing experience.
You can also borrow kayaks to explore neighbouring islands.

As the resort is so tiny, the little restaurant serves whatever the cook feels like making that day - no menu! But the food was excellent.

This is not a resort for non-animal lovers - when we were there, there were several very friendly cats and dogs. One of the dogs is an excellent whale spotter!

We really enjoyed our stay and hope to return.
