Mounu Island is a true South Pacific gem with everything you can hope for. Great sandy beaches, turquoise water, idyllic fales, fantastic food (three times a day) and plenty of options to go snorkelling, swimming, whale watching, canoeing to uninhabited islands or just doing nothing. Best of all this is a place that cannot get overcrowded. Pure bliss.

Alan, Lynn, Kirsty and their crew really did look after us and everything was organised seamlessly and with a smile. We stayed for 5 nights and would have loved to stay longer. We will be back one day, hoping that not much will change.

We have just returned from 4 nights of gourmet food, snorkeling and swimming with the Humpback Whales on Mounu Island. We only had time for one encounter with the Whales because two of the most unpredictable elements of a holiday worked against us...Weather and wild animals! We did spend time in the water with a mother and her calf and there are no words to describe the joy of that experience. They are such playful and curious creatures they came to us repeatedly wanting to play!
The Fales on Mounu are Eco Friendly "Beach Shacks" open to the beautiful tropical surroundings. We could walk off our balcony over the sand and straight into the turquoise waters that surround the Island to snorkel on the reef. There are only 4 Fales on the island so there is only a maximum of 8 guests at a time which makes this a very exclusive destination with lots of privacy.
If you cant live without electricity and room service find an other destination but if you love peace and quiet, good food and a little adventure in crystal clear tropical water you have found the perfect place.

This is a truly special part of the universe tucked away on a small coral atoll surrounded by crystal waters of fantastic clarity and a profusion of colours of a tropical sea.Only limited accommodation with four private fales each strategically close to its own beach with the gentle lapping of the ocean to ensure a sound sleep day or night.Alan and Lyn are friendly and welcoming hosts who have a profound knowledge of the Pacific and Tonga and humpback whales in particular. We had two unique days with Alan and Marta ( she must get employee of the year) swimming with the gentle and intelligent whales in a life changing encounter. Considering Mounu is in the middle of the Pacific ocean the catering is excellent. Not cheap but not excessive considering the logistics of a running a resort with unique situation and possibilities of staying in the playground of the humpback whales. I can strongly recommend this island resort but not the place for those who can not live without mod cons , TV and motorised sports. We loved it and will certainly return.

Room Tip: Honeymoon fale even if it is not your honeymoon

I recently had the pleasure of meeting Lyn, Alan and Marta on the amazing Mounu Island and paradise is the only word to describe this fantastic place and wonderful people.
We anchored in the bay in front of the island and went whale-watching with Alan and Marta and it was one of the most magical experiences I have ever had. Alan really is the 'Whale Man', his knowledge and experience with these creatures and the surrounding waters is second to none and Marta was a great guide.
I will be back to visit.
(A quick mention goes out to Otto who insists on cuddles..no exceptions)

Room Tip: I did not stay on the island but Lyn showed us one of the 'Fale's' and it was exceptiona...

We yachted into Mounu for lunch one sunny Tongan Day - Call first as everything is freshly ordered and cooked. The resort is a dream - well suited for private holidays or honeymoon destination, a small island paradise. Little things added a special feel, raked sand footpaths, the sprouting coconut borders. Otto, the late King V's dog bounding aroung the island digging for crabs while you giggle at the antics. Food is a delight - we only stayed for lunch but felt very special. Thanks Allan and Lyn an Mata - Annette and Pete (Sunsail Falau).

Room Tip: Sorry we could not stay - all Fales looked great !

We stayed five sunny days with Allan and Lynn in Mounu Island with our two boys, age 3 and 5. Mounu is the most beautiful spot on earth, a small island with white beaches and turquise water. They have five fales all situated very privately on the beach. We stayed in the Honeymoon fale, which is the biggest and only one with space for extra beds for the kids. The fale was beautiful and very basic with a wonderful spacious veranda in front of it.

We were the only guests staying in Mounu Island, which seems to be the only high end resort in Vava'u that is open out of season. Even though the island is spacious with lots of friendly beaches, the place is not well suited for bringing kids, since food and temperament seems mostly for adults.
