I’ve stayed in literally hundreds of hostels all over the world, but this is honestly, without exaggeration, the dirtiest hostel I’ve ever seen. I have literally never seen anything like it in my travels. I arrived, and greeted by the lovely staff member who showed me my dorm, to which I was flabbergasted. I let out an “Oh my god” when she showed it to me, and her response was, “yeah, we have a few guys that have stayed here for a while, so it gets a little messy”.
Let me put it into perspective. There was literally writing on the walls. Clothes were absolutely EVERYWHERE – covering the floors, hanging from beds, over door knobs. One guy had even set up his own clothes rack. Opened dirty food (bread, chips, biscuits, cereal) was littered all over the floor – which may have been the reason behind my hearing the scurring of little “animal like” feet on the floorboards in the middle of the night. The lights in the dorm remained on until well past 2am. The entire establishment smelled of cigarette smoke. The “common room” was equally messy, with food, clothes, cutlery and cups all over the place. The bathroom literally had half filled coffee mugs that had been there for who knows how long next to the sink.
I don’t want to turn this into a total tirade against this hostel, but I have photos of every claim I make above (except for the sounds at night, and the smoke smells obviously). I do need to say that the staff were lovely, and that this type of accommodation probably suits long term workers who are comfortable in such unsanitary conditions. I would, however, suggest that travellers who have stayed in hostels in Australia and overseas do NOT compare this to the traditional hostel.
