Description: With great food and drink six nights a week, and some of Melbourne's best live music and DJs on the weekends, it's pretty easy to see why so many folks love to call The Gem in Collingwood their very own pub.Drop in sometime and see why the critics rate our pub grub as some of the best damn pub food in Melbourne.Great music. Great food. A great Collingwood pub. A great Melbourne pub.

We checked this place out as it had a write up in the Melbourne paper as one of Melbournes best pubs.
I must say, it has a really good feel to it and fantastic service.

The pulled pork burger was fantastic - just like the states.

Very well priced ($5 for a bowl of spanish olives NOTE - its about 15 large olives)

Service was fantastic, menu had a good variety.

I want to return and try the $28 platter including the ribs!

The Gem is well worth the short drive out of Melbourne CBD. Four of us had the $28 Sunday Texas BBQ special. Very generous portions (my brother said you know a meal is big when even he cant finish it) and truly outstanding food. The buttermilk fried chicken was amazing and even the bowl of french fries was damn good. Fast and friendly service and they clearly have an outstanding chef. If I lived in Melbourne I would go there every Sunday, none of us could fault the food nor the value. If ordering the BBQ special, we would highly recommend the brisket, pulled pork and sausages. The ribs weren't as tender as I would expect but great flavour. The corn is amazing. We even asked if they could bring us a couple of buns (not on the menu) to make sandwiches with our bbq plate and it was no problem.

A group of 11 met here last Wednesday night and on arrival I was escorted up a really steep flight of stairs where we had a room to ourselves. Having recently had knee and lung surgery, the stairs were challenging to say the least, but no doubt the size of our group dictated the upstairs room. However, the service could not be faulted - a really lovely waitress, who was extremely helpful without being intrusive, and plenty of space with the seating. So far so good - we had all arrived by about 7.15pm and had ordered by about 7.30. However, by 8.30pm there was still no sign of our meals and the troops were becoming restless. Meals finally arrived at about 8.40. The menu was very interesting and quite well priced.

Meals ordered included: 1 saganaki, 3 haloumi burgers, 2 chicken schnitzels, 1 pulled pork sandwich, 2 brazilian fish stews. The saganaki was good, the pulled pork sandwich (which came in a roll instead of bread) was otherwise lovely, and the fish stew was outstandingly good. However, the haloumi burgers were very disappointing, with a slice of grilled haloumi in a dry roll with a bit of rocket, a bit of chipotle and no butter . It was probably an effort to provide a vegetarian option, but showed little imagination and had just as little flavour. All who ordered it were very disappointed. The other fail was the schnitzels, both of which were actually burnt! Having waited so long for the meal the schnitzel victims elected to try and eat their meal, but there is really little excuse for serving burnt food! When the bill arrived, the burnt schnitzels were mentioned and to give credit where due, an apology was made and the cost was deducted from the bill promptly .

Overall, 3 of our group said they would not return, but the others would all be happy to go there again. So I think it fair to say it was a mixed experience, but worth another try!

My family made the trek to find this place in Collingwood and first impression was rather tentative. It was dimly-lit halfway down and even dimmer road. I volunteered to run in to check out the menu and it only took 30 secs to scan and give the thumbs up for my hubby to park the car and disgorge the hungry.
Food was nicely cooked, great portion sizes and so reasonable! What a pleasant surprise. Truly a gem!

We've been going to The Gem for 4 years. Great high quality food, good range of menu choices, good and reasonably priced drinks- nice - uber cool - staff. Daggy but charming dining rooms upstairs and down. Lovely experience sitting in cute small main bar , eating and enjoying the usually retro often live music. Mostly a youthful friendly clientele, but they dont seem to mind we middle aged ones!
