The Gallipoli Houses
Ranked #2 of 4 Hotels in Eceabat
Reviewed August 27, 2013

We are spending the third and sadly our last night here. Gallipoli Houses is boutique accommodation with 10 rooms, which are tastefully appointed. The owners are very ready to help with local information and have easily accommodated my wife's gluten free diet. The houses are set in a small, quiet rural village. Chickens cats, dogs roam freely around the well cared for grounds. As the accommodation is located a short distance from the town Eceabat the owners provide a more than adequate table d'hôte meal if advised in advance. They will also provide a lunch satchel if requested which means you can spend all day exploring the Gallipoli battle fields without worrying about looking for a local eatery.

Gallipoli Houses is a quiet sanctuary from the ravages of the day's activities.

It seems like a waste a time, especially if you're going from Istanbul down to Bergama and beyond, but this was a gem. After some days in Istanbul, it's like an oasis. The owners are friendly, and will advise you on what to do if you're not sure. They'll even set you up with beach gear so that you can explore some amazing beaches on your own, which are practically empty. The breakfast is awesome, and the dinner that they offer (at an extra charge) is good, although not great. Still, it's nice if you've been out all day.

Located in Kocadere village. Easy to reach all the sites and also the ferry.Kocadere is a very quiet place. The only voice you can hear is the roosters. Rooms are very spacious. We were three people and stayed at Kocadere room It has a huge terrace also. Bathroom and shower is quite nice. They serve decent breakfast. Highly recommended.

Unfortunately, we only stayed for one night, but enjoyed our room, the delicately spiced food and the terrace very much. The hotel was easy to find and had a cosy family character. Best bathroom/shower in Turkey! The village is very quiet but at a close distance to the ferries.

A very pleasant stay in a hotel that is a bit difficult to find at first but is finally very convenient as it is centrally located in the peninsula. They speak both French and English which makes communication easier than elsewhere in Turkey. They serve an excellent Turkish lemonade on arrival and then show you to your room after lending you a detailed map of the area and guidebook to the different cemeteries and memorials.
We had a tastefully decorated room with a terrace that gave on to the countryside and nearby mosque. The only negative point was the bed (queenside (!) and with a rail at the bottom that is inconvenient for tall guests.)
Dinner was simple but delicious (traditional mezzes and tarragon chicken followed by fruit salad).
Wine by the glass, was, for once, fantastic, especially the red one.
In the morning the French-speaking owner took a lot of his time to explain what we needed to see on our way to Assos and even printed some documents for our journey.
We only wish we had been able to stay at least two nights as the Gallipoli peninsula, in addition to being a must-see historical area is a beautiful natural place with wonderful coastline : it really gives food for thought when you think of the thousands of young men of different nationalities who came to die here.

For those wanting to explore Gallipoli it is hard to think of a better base than Gallipoli Houses. The grounds are lovely, the rooms are spacious and very comfortable, and the hospitality is warm and generous. Drinks on the rooftop terrace looking over the mosque to Third or Gun Ridge at sunset is very special. Incongruous really when you think of the suffering - the village (about 50 inhabitants) shelled by the Allies was a large Turkish base - with a major hospital for the wounded.

We took the half board option and loved the meals. It is a 3 course meal that changes every night. You are asked to indicate dietary requirements in advance and meals designed around that. We enjoyed not having to agonise over menus.

It is close to ANZAC Cove - about 3 kms as the crow flies and you look up to the summit of Chunuk Bair. No pool but it is about 15-20min drive to the Kabatepe or Brighton Beach.

I had worried about being off the beaten track especially for the younger members of our party.Canakkale and Encebat provide choice of restaurants, bars ( and ATM) but we found the peace of Gallipoli Houses made a better space for experiencing/reflecting on Gallipoli.

PS Do visit Cape Helles - it puts the ANZAC into context and is beautiful as well.

We loved everything!
1 The houses--- in a restful, tranquil setting in the depths of the outstanding countryside. I was prepared for Gallipoli to be interesting, sad, a salutary experience but I was not prepared for such empty, beautiful countryside and coast.(yes there are lots of tourists but one can easily get right away from them)

2 An amenable, welcoming, knowledgeable, host who was more than willing to share his knowledge to help us make the most of our trip. The advice he gave us and maps and books he loaned us really put things into perspective and guided our visits. The history of the First World War battles there is so complex (and personal) it is advisable to do as much research as possible before visiting (even then we were confused until we had actually seen the places for ourselves) Thanks also for the advice on our onward route. It gave us some fantastic last views of Turkey before we headed home.

3 Wonderful relaxed, helpful staff who worked as an efficient team

4. Large, spotlessly clean, modern, thoughtfully, tastefully decorated rooms. Our room had a lovely patio area with access to a well kept garden and views over the village. it was a delight to sit there and listen to the silence.

5 Delicious food served appetizingly

Erik has worked hard to make Gallipoli Houses---- well, perfection in our opinion .Definitely the place to stay on Gallipoli.!!
