“Sorry to disappoint but it's not actually five stars!”
Reviewed October 6, 2013 via mobile

People who describe a place as 'five stars' when it's not, have usually never experienced true five star. In terms of 'hotel' Borgo San Rocco isn't five stars, it's mostly four and at times only three. Certainly the view is five star, the village too and definitely the warm welcome and ongoing charm from Vittorio, the omnipresent owner and a true gentle man. But generally, rooms are fairly expensive, pretty basic and more rustic and sparse than comfortable or luxurious. Bathrooms are not that big, with no bath just shower and certainly no where to relax (not even in a suite) apart from laying on the bed. Reception area/lobby isn't really that comfy either, not a place I would spend a long evening reading a book, for example. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful, the owners son is too (but he really should wear a shirt & tie). Unfortunately, one evening our waiter seemed quite stressed and it showed in his service. People who praise the breakfast must have stayed somewhere else as I thought it very disappointing, limited and after a week a bit depressing to be honest- I'm sorry but it's only three stars in my opinion. There's no artisan breads, no decent cheese, no interesting salamis. What was there was laid out on three revolving wooden boards that made selecting a slice of ham, cheese or cutting a chunk from the baguette more like hooking a plastic duck at a fairground. The selection of prepared fruits was lacklustre but pastries OK. The waitress is doing front and back so if she's dissappeard into the kitchen it can take you ten minutes to order a cappacino or longer to have various breakfast items replenished! It's a minor point but I was also disappointed honey was in sachets and jam in little plastic pots, no homemade Sicilian there. Star of the show however was the blood orange juice which was superb but generally speaking breakfast was nothing to write home about. Also, if it were up to me I would replace the toaster with a commercial one. As for evening dinner I wouldn't rave about it either, it was OK, reasonably priced but not memorable. I would change the muzak style or audio speakers for something sounding much better but not so it's intrusive.

The one thing that I wouldn't change is Vittorio and the best thing about the place. He made our stay unforgettable and for that he gets true five stars! If he invites you for lunch then just go with the flow, you'll end up in the hotel kitchen cooking pasta.
Please don't let my comments put you off, it definitely a quirky and memorable place to stay but it's not actually five star!

P.S. The pool is OK but on a lower level some walk from the hotel proper. And please try and take a small or medium sized hire car there, a full-size is more hassle due to the steep, narrow and cobbled two-way road up to the hotel and DON'T drive on past the hotel entrance/car park up the hill regardless thinking you can turn round or get through as it becomes increasingly tight and restricted. Impossible in a large vehicle!

Our family of 4 was just looking for place to stay while visiting Mn Etna instead we got a superb suite for 4. excellent breakfast and dinner, outstanding views, helpful staff and marvelous owner Vitorio, who made everybody feel at home, he passed from table to table uniting all of us to one international family. Nobody could stand against his warmth, sense of humor and kindness. I just hope we will be able to visit this place again.

Coppola got it right when he picked the village of Savoca to represent Corleone in his filming of "The Godfather". The village is truly charming and authentic with a taste and feeling that is purely Sicilian. With vistas of the Mediterranean and unspoiled landscapes in every direction, Savoca is a real hidden treasure that we are afraid to share with the world for fear that it will be overrun by tourists and commercialism. At the very top of the village is the resort of Borgo San Rocco that seems sprouted from the roots of this magical town. The facility is unexpectedly beautiful and maintained as a five star resort with well equipped rooms, a full kitchen that offers fine dining with a Sicilian cuisine and pleasant staff who speak most every language. We had the pleasure of getting to know Vitorio who is the owner and creator of this outstanding resort and who's family roots are entwined with the roots and soil of the town itself. We were fortunate to visit Savoca during the festival Santa Lucia and were treated to the traditions of the township and introduced to many people by our gracious host Vitorio who knows just about everyone and who made us feel at home with his Sicilian warmth and charm. All I can say is that our visit to Borgo San Rocco and the village of Savoca has left a lasting impression in our hearts and soul that we will cherish for ever. The LaGuardia Family

We can't stress enough how amazing this place is. It may be the views, it may be the wonderful rooms, it may be the amazing service, it may be all the little extras they do, that extra mile. It might be all of these things, but we are sure that it is Vittorio the owner, friend and all around a great man. The moment we arrived, even before we checked in he started talking to us like we were friends forever. He made us feel so at home. During dinner he came, reccomended some dishes, wines and liquers and sat and talked with us. He is truelly an exceptional man who built the place out of love and desire to insipre people. His staff is nothing short of amazing, always attentive, smiling and just great hosts. I would reccomand you stay there for a couple of days and just make friends with the amazing people there. Listen to their advice, be it regarding food (the hotel's restaurant is simply briliant), and trip ideas.

We will come back.

Saluti Vittorio and everyone there.

Tal & Jonatan.

Stayed with my wife 2 nights in July and was completely delighted with both Savoca and the Hotel! Unfortunately we had already planned out further trip so could not stay bit longer.
Savoca is beautiful authentic Sicilian village in the hills 15 min drive from the sea. It is not packed with tourists (like Taorimina) so it is very quiet and relaxing place though not the most accessible (but this probably one of the reasons why it kept its original charm). There is not much to do in the evening, but this was what we wanted (romantic dinner at the hotel was the right choice for us).
The hotel is really something special. We booked a superior room which had a beautiful view of the hills and the sea. The room was spacious with comfortable beds. One of the things which are really special about this hotel is the exceptional hospitality!
Do not miss the dinner at the hotel, great food in relaxing and romantic atmosphere. Vitorio is really great host and will make sure that you wine glass is not empty.
Definitely will come again.

Room Tip: We had a room 303 (superior room) and it had great view from the balcony.

This place is amazing and Vitorio and staff are the best hosts we have ever experienced!

As I assume many do, we stayed in savoca as it was the medieval town where the 1st godfather film was filmed. From that perspective it doesn't disappoint. But it's So much more!

We arrived late at night out of Normal hours and had a wee bit of car trouble ( very steep, very narrow streets! You will need a car if you stay here) but Vitorio and staff couldn't have been more welcoming! We were handed drinks and ushered to sit and relax and assured the staff would sort all our car worries. Vitorio even offered to make us some dinner himself.  Vitorio or staff are always on hand to help any way they can. I've never felt better looked after in a hotel! It was as though we were part of the family!

Our room was lovely! Wooden floor and ceiling and a balcony looking out to the sea! Amazing! The pool is Probably the most scenic pool we've ever used, in a relaxing setting with hammocks. It's a steep hill down to the pool so it might be an idea to wear shoes other than flip flops. The resort itself is Integrated into the medieval town so different areas of accommodation appear to be a little different, providing a totally

There's not a bar as such but the staff will get you drinks and there's a large foyer with sofas and chairs together with outside seating for relaxing.  I asked for a soft drink i dont think they normally stocked but the staff managed to find me some. Theres not a wine list but the chef will select and recommend a bottle for each meal. I can't praise the service and care enough! The people were lovely and totally genuine!

The full resort and service is such a high standard. This is without a doubt our favourite place we've ever stayed! We did however find our evening meal only average. I actually feel really bad having to say that as everything else was so perfect. The only reason this even slightly detracts is because savoca is a very small town with few other options for dining.

It takes a great deal to make me slow down on holiday and the borgo San rocco resort achieved this! We actually missed out on visiting etna this visit in favour of spending more time in savoca. We know we'll be back. We can do etna then!

Thank you!
