Owner description: Parks Canada protects and presents the cultural heritage and integrity of Fort Wellington on behalf of all Canadians. Open to the public, the fort tells unique and authentic stories, from the War of 1812 up until the First World War, by facilitating real and inspiring visitor experiences. Costumed historical interpreters engage visitors through interpretive talks, presentations and period demonstrations such as cooking over an open fire, rifle and cannon firings, period crafts and games. Special events take place throughout the year and education programs entertain school age children from the area and as far away as Toronto, Ottawa and Kingston. Currently, visitors begin their visit at the Visitor Centre, enjoying exhibits and an orientation video. Visitors then follow the path to the historic site where interpretive staff dressed as soldiers and wives of soldiers bring the site to life. The Barracks Store Gift Shop specializes in merchandise including local arts and crafts, souvenirs, historical publications, period games and clothing. The Prescott Heritage River Trail is a walking trail running along the St. Lawrence for the length of the Fort property. This scenic trail is enhanced with interpretive panels exploring the history of the property and the use of the river as a transhipment route.

“you will learn a lot”

We were impressed with this NHS. There is an interesting museum and very informed costumed guides in the fort. You will be amazed at the conditions the soldiers endured.

“Great Historic Site”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Fort Wellington is an excellent historic site situated right on the St Lawrence River. The grounds are well kept and large, overing a clear view onto the river. The hull of a rare 1812 gunboat in the new visitor's centre is worth a visit alone. Inside the fort has been kept to the 1840's original. A visit during the day is a must, but if the opportunity affords for a night visit, jump at it. The ghost stories at this fort are chilling.

“Definitely worth a visit”
Reviewed October 26, 2012

This is a small fort and we thought an hour would be more than enough to finish seeing it. We ended up spending almost the entire morning here. The visitors center was very nice -renovated in May 2012--and they had a lovely museum with the remains of a 1812 warship. The fort buildings, the tunnel leading to the caponniere ( a stone walled room ) jutting outside the ramparts, the informative guides made for a very enjoyable visit.

“Interesting historical site”
Reviewed September 5, 2012

During our holiday we bought the Parks Canada Discovery Pass (http://www.pc.gc.ca/eng/kiosk/index/dp.aspx) and this pass includes this fort. If you plan to visit more historical site and national parks it is worth to buy the pass.
The fort was interesting it showed us some exciting moments of the US-Canda war in early 19. cent. The new visitor center was good as well with the currently renovated old wooden vessel.
We was there on the way from Ottawa to 1000 islands area, if you plan to visit the area it could be an interesting point to visit Fort Wellington as well.
