Our stay at Island Sands, Unit #605 was fantastic! The unit is beautifully decorated which provides a very rich and homey atmosphere. The view from this unit is exquisite and it's positioning means that you're protected from direct sunlight; so warm and breezy, but extremely comfortable. Also great whale watching here on the 6th floor. Nikta was very helpful and was always available, which enhanced our stay. We're in next year!

This was our third time staying in one of Nikta Houston's units and it never ceases to amaze us how accommodating and helpful Nikta always is. We had our 6 month old grandson with us this time and Nikta had the baby furniture waiting for us when we arrived.
The condo is beautifully decorated and fully stocked with everything you need.
We loved having coffee out on the lanai every morning as there is a great view and most times you will see whales playing in the bay.
The area is very quiet and almost seems to be in the center of all the attractions.
The residents are all very friendly and we had the pleasure of attending one of their Saturday pupu parties at the pool.
I would highly recommend Nikta and Unikta Vacations to anyone wanting to vacation in Maui.
We love staying in the area and cannot wait to return.

Maalaea Bay has a bad reputation because of a certain book. I am so greatful for that review! That makes the whole Maalaea Bay are the best picking. My family has stayed here twice. They have elevators and beautifully landscape gardens. There is no beach per-say. It's right on the reef so you hear the crashing all the time. But there is a small inlet that you can walk down to and be right on the sand. It's too rocky there to risk swimming out but we enjoyed watching the crabs and often saw turtles there. It is a condo unit that has regular residents so they do not like noisy children especially in the pool. We heard a few complaints about the noise restrictions but our daughter is very quiet and no one ever gave us a problem. In fact the people living there would talk to us from their balconies. And all the lanais face the bay and you can watch the whales easily and the sunrise over Haleakala in the distance. It is really windy so the AC isn't really necessary. I can't say how much I enjoyed taking naps with just the wind blowing on me in the afternoon. And there is also a koi pond by the elevators. So the only thing this place lacks is a beach but it is literally a 5 minute walk down the road.
We happened to be there on Easter and we had glow in the dark easter eggs. We put those out for my daughter after sunset and had such great fun. A good number of residents came out to watch and encourage her.
The kitchens are very well stocked with the utensils you will need. We even had a great stock of spices and coffee free to use. Always bring your cereal and snacks in your luggage with plastic containers. Food can be very expensive and Maui's fire ants get into everything. I've never stayed in any place without the ants hanging out. It's just the way it is. I highly reccomend lock n lock brand containers. There are several grills by the small pool that are nice for cooking up the fresh fish you can get down at the harbor. Oh and there is no hot tub, I know that was a dissapointment for my stepfather. :)
But it is a great central place to be on the island. There is little night life though. There is a small shopping complex with a bar just up the street. It's more of a local hangout. They gave my stepdad a lil bit of the stink-eye when he was there, but he screams tourist when you look at him. lol. My husband had no problem though, and got along great talking to everyone every night. Then there is the aquarium which is a definite must visit. Last time we went in 2007 there was a gas station, some small eateries and a miniature golf course right along there as well. Add the harbor with the easy access snorkel & fishing charters and you have everything you need.
Also, when you go to Maui, make sure to check out the Maui Tropical Plantation. Their restaurant has the most stunning view of the mountains and the food is ono! (very good) They have lush gardens and it is a working plantation that you can take a trolley ride through. They teach you about the produce of Maui and let you wander around. We saw ginger, pineapples, starfruit, coffee, orchids, papaya, mango, banana...the works. They also give you samples of Maui gold pineapples (best pineapples on the face of this planet!) and do a coconut demonstration. You will learn so much. Then they have an extensive store and will ship pineapples and coconuts for you. Don't miss out!
Anything else I can think of about this unit? Oh-the other view out of the 2nd bedroom is of the mountains and we saw rainbows several times.
And if you never been there, the road to Hana isn't about getting to Hana, it's about enjoying the entire trip along the way. And right below I'oa Needle (sp?) there is a multicultural garden. Do not pass that by. IT is a hidden gem. It has gardens set up to the style of all the cultures that contribute to Maui and it's right along a small river. It is fantastic for a picnic lunch and photos. We found it by accident and I can't wait to go back! The photography you can have there is phenomenal!

Room Tip: each unit is different because they are privately owned. You will find different things in each unit...

This was our second stay at the Island Sands and we absolutely love it! The location is perfect; it is centrally located to everything on Maui (airport, Kahului for shopping, Lahaina, the great beaches along Kihei, Wailea, and Makena, walking distance to the Maui Ocean Center and shops.) It is also nicely located on a dead end street, without a lot of traffic and the associated noise. A short walk to the end of this street is a public park with access to a great sandy beach, where you can walk for 2-1/2 miles before encountering another building. Go for a walk in the early morning (which is easy, early in your stay as your body is adjusting to the time change from the U.S. mainland) and you will have this beach to yourself. Nikta's unit #605 is very nicely appointed and decorated beautifully in a very appropriate island motif with bamboo floors throughout. It was nice to rent from someone who lives on Maui, and who we had had the pleasure of meeting at the weekly pupu party held at the pool on Saturday evenings. She is very accommodating, and eager to help you make the most of your time on Maui if you are seeking suggestions. Overall, all of the residents we met from the Island Sands are very friendly and nice to chat with around the pool or barbeque grills. We look forward to our next visit to paradise, and would highly recommend Island Sands #605 from Unikta Vacations to anyone!

Wow, what a great stay we had at Island Sands unit #605. The unit is beautifully decorated, well stocked with everything you could need and very clean. We spent a good portion of our time sitting out on the lanai enjoying the spectacular ocean views. There is something special about starting your day with a nice cup of coffee and breathing in the refreshingly clean ocean air while you sit on your lanai gazing out at the incredible ocean. And, to end your day sitting on the lanai with a cocktail watching the sunset is even better! Nikta Houston, who owns and manages the property, is a gem among gems. It was so nice to have a manager that lives locally. Any questions or needs that we had were met promptly and with a smile. Nikta is very helpful with suggestions for anything that you might want to explore on the island. Being a resident of Maui, she has seen and done just about everything. She is epitome of "Aloha" and the island way of life. Because Maalaea is so centrally located, it is the perfect location to see everything on the island. Nikta and her amazing condo have won us over and we will be back again and again. Thank you for all of your hospitality, Nikta!!!!

Room Tip: I loved that unit #605 is on the top floor so it was very quiet.

We absolutely love Nikta's beautiful 2BD/2BA unit at Island Sands and we cannot wait to go back. There is access to a great little beach right behind the building and most days we were the only ones on it. We fished right off the beach and caught enough papio and lai for two nights dinners, which we BBQd down stairs by the pool. The view is terrific from the lanai and we could watch the sunset from the bed in the master bedroom. There is a washer/dryer and full kitchen. Just stop at the grocery on the way in and you are set! We cooked many of our own meals (which saved lots of money) and with the washer/dryer, you hardly have to bring any clothes at all. Nikta has setup the unit beautifully and it is spotless when you arrive. You can see lots of pictures at her website http://www.uniktavacations.com/condo2.html
In the evening just open up the back bedroom windows and the lanai screen door and a breeze blows right through. Terrific!

We would recommend Island Sands #605 whole-heartedly. It feels like home the minute you walk in and working with Nikta is effortless. She also has a 1BD/1BA unit in the building next door, Ma'alaea Banyans #219. We've stayed there twice. It's perfect for a couple and the view toward SE Maui and Molokini is incredible. We love Nikta and Ma'alaea!

Island Sands and Ma'alaea Banyans are located near Ma'alaea Harbor, away from the busy tourist areas yet accessible to everything. Kihei is just a few miles away (that's where we went for groceries), Lahaina and Ka'anipali are to the west, and we took highway 30 several times over to Wailuku and Happy Valley. We like Ma'alaea because it feels like you're in the center of everything but away from the crowds. We watched the dive boats leaving for Molokini right from Ma'alaea Harbor and we walked to the Maui Aquarium. BONUS: right at the end of Hauoli Street is a beautiful sandy beach. I couldn't find it in the guide books either, so it is almost private. Sometimes Ma'alaea can get windy, but because of the way the buildings are situated they act as big windblocks and we were never bothered by it. We sat out on the lanai everyday. This was our most relaxing vacation ever!

Mahalo Nikta! Hope we get to stay with you again soon!

Room Tip: Contact Nikta Houston at http://www.uniktavacations.com/index.html That's all we do!
