Great crew. The captain was awesome. Hit major winds and waves back from Molokini, but the captain... read more
Captain Kiwi, Noah & Tanya were outstanding. The history provided by Captain Kiwi throughout the cruise was very helpful as well as informative. Just great time particularly when we noted that the boat only had 31 passengers on board. Although it advertises a capacity a little over 50, they stay in the 30 range which leaves more than enough room for everyone. Because we visited Turtle Town first, we had Molikini all to ourselves when we arrived later in the morning. My wife an I highly recommend this snorkeling tour .
We arrived at the pier early and waited till the captain let us all board. It wasn't overly crowded which was nice and the boat was a reasonable size. We had the safety talk and out we went. What we liked was that the captain decided to go to turtle bay first and avoid the crowds and then the crater after. Alas we personally never saw a turtle but saw some nice marine life at the crater.
Some people in other reviews complained that they felt the talks and jokes were repetitive and the crew seemed disinterested but bear in mind how many times they do this a week. We found all 3 crew members attentive, helpful, interested in our safety and enjoyment.
Once we left the final stop we had a really nice BBQ lunch which included burgers, hot dogs, chicken, pasta salad and veggie options. There was plenty there for seconds and 'homemade' cookies after. They also opened up the bar afterwards and the beer, soft drinks and mai tais were flowing. They stopped serving drinks just before arrival back to the port, which was fair enough.
All in all we had no issues with this company and we spent ages reviewing the various providers. If you want a big boat and tons of people do Pride of Maui which is owed by same company. If you want a smaller more intimate but still fun experience then go with this one.
I booked our original trip with Pride of Maui, and unfortunately, was notified that their fleet would be undergoing maintenance during our stay. We had the option to refund and book with someone else, or go with Leilani (Maui Boat Trips) instead. We were told their trips were more intimate (aka smaller boats) but the itinerary looked good and so were the reviews.
What a disappointment... I did a similar trip 2 years ago with a different company and this didn't compare at all. First of all, the crew was so cheesy. That's the most complimentary thing I can say.. completely disinterested in the guests. Captain CJ didn't have one genuine thing to say, scripted stories, instructions, reaction from his crew. They weren't unprofessional, but obviously they have done this so much it's not one bit enjoyable for them.
I'm not a big fan of the smaller boats, especially when it's windy and the water is rough. Take that into consideration... Maui is windy and this boat is SMALL. You will be better server going with a different group.
We went on this tour last year and when we returned to Maui this spring we knew we had to go again. It was spectacular, we made it out to Molikini Crater this year and it was teeming with life. We met the boat at Maalaea Harbour, slip 68, which is on the far side of the harbour (open ocean side). There is limited parking located at the harbour, but you can park for free in the far end of the Maui Ocean Centre parking lot (for free) and then just a short walk down to the slip). Once you arrive fill out a waiver that is located on clipboards at the slip, the captain will gather them once people have arrived. You load the boat, you get a short safety talk, then you leave the harbour. We went a bit "backwards" on our tour which worked out great. We went to Olowalu (Turtle Reef) first, there was only one other boat there so lots of room to snorkel. Saw quite a few fish and 4 or 5 Honu. We've snorkelled here twice and I would have to say it can be hit or miss with what you see.
We all got back on the boat, and started to head towards the crater. We had lunch on the way, burgers, chicken, hotdogs, veggie burgers, pasta salad, veggies and dip. It was very good, drinks were plentiful (the alcohol is served after the last snorkel of the day, on the way back to harbour). The snorkelling at the crater was amazing, there was only 2 other boats there, so lots of space to snorkel and there clarity was spectacular. The closer to the edge, the shallower the water and the greater variety in sea life.
They do have wetsuit shirts that you can rent for $10 for the day, they offer this after leaving the harbour first thing. I noticed they had new snorkel gear this year, worked better than last year. There are pool noodles to use while snorkelling and they always have one crew member out in the water with a surf board. The crew was great (Captain C.J., Josh, and Tanya) always available if you have any questions or concerns. The boat has a seating area up top with no shade, but there is ample seating below which is shaded.
The price is great and the tour size is small (there were 25), don't settle for some other tour where you pay more and you have +100 people.
The boat wasn't crowded with people, which made the journey to the crater and turtle town more pleasant. We were only able to see one turtle but we saw lots of tropical fish. There was a variety of food for lunch and plenty of drinks.
GREAT snorkeling and whale watching trips. Snorkling out at Moliniki is incredible and if your lucky enough to have a whale come up to the boat...wow.
Water, sunning, swimming and lunch. Nice day early morning departure.
