“Charming Property”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

My wife and I stayed at this charming and rusting b&b in Sirence for one night while visiting Ephesus. First, I have to say that the village was incredible. Located along a hilltop several kilometers outside of town, Sirince is cholk full of charming shops, inns and restaurants. On Saturday, there was a wonderful market selling trinkets, food and other wares.

As for our room, to call it charming is an understatement. Located on the second floor, our room was very large. The floors were wooden and we had a large window, which looked out into the town and rolling hills. The bathroom was enrormous and included a turkish bath with electric jets, which served me well b/c I became extremely ill (wholly unrelated to my experience in Sirence).

The service at the hotel was first rate. The manager spoke good English and the additional help (although limited in their English) were always eager to help. When they found out that I was sick, the manager and additional staff member drove my wife into town to a pharmacy to purchase medicine. The hotel also served us a complimentary lunch (we didn't make breakfast).

The evening before we dined at the restuarant, which was terrific. There was live music and an assortment of fresh mezes that were delivered to our table (we literally pointed to the ones we wanted). Parking was difficult given the windy streets, but the manager offered to park our car for us, which we greatly appreciated.

The only minor criticism I have is that I suspect I may have overpaid for the room. I paid $130 on Hotels.com (a bit expensive in comparison to the competition). While taking my lunch, an English speaking tourist walked into the property and inquired how much a room cost. He was quoted a significantly lower price in Turkish Lira.

When planning a trip to Ephesus and the surrounding attractions, I really wanted an alternative to the hotels in Selcuk. I found it with Kirkinca and Sirince. The hotel is very rustic, but the staff is very helpful (good English), and the ambiance of the town and the hotel was just what I was looking for. There are no TVs or conveniences to speak of in the rooms and the style is traditional. I have no complaints about it at all. The village was quite busy with tourists when we arrived after mid-day, but by evening they had mostly gone and the village was even more serene and picturesque.

The hotel is more difficult to locate than I imagined, but when I stopped to ask for directions, and older lady hoped in to show me the way (turns out she was the inn keeper's mother), and upon arrival we were greeted with a delicious orange and mint drink in the breakfast area (which has lovely views of the village). That pretty much set the stage for the rest of our stay.

My wife and I were in Turkey for 10 days and the best meal we had was in the Kirkinca restaurant. We actually ate both lunch and dinner here. i don't think you could go wrong with anything on the menu and the wine selection was much broader than I anticipated. Breakfast the next morning was a traditional Turkish breakfast and quite good as well.

I can see that this hotel would not be right for every traveler, but if you have a sense of adventure and want an alternative to Selcuk, I recommend Kirkinca.

Located on a cobblestone street in the tiny, idyllic mountain village of Sirince, the 250-year-old Kirkinca is a delightful spot to base, whether exploring nearby Ephesus or heading father afield. The pension is simply perfect…and perfectly simple. Our small room was on a quiet byway overlooking an oleander tree, morning silence broken only by the nearby mosque’s call to prayer. Generous breakfasts, which included typical veggies, eggs, breads and jam, were served in a glass-enclosed patio with views of the village and jewel-like terraced fields. Above all: the Kirkinca is managed by hospitable, competent Mustafa Yildirdi, whose good humor, flexibility and resourcefulness are matched only by his excellent English. This pension is a fine value. Add a fifth star to Trip Advisor’s ranking. Also part of the complex: Erdem House, a stone’s throw from the Kirkinca. Larger than the old building and recently renovated, it offers an inviting, leafy outdoor patio. Both places and some private homes are owned by enterprising local brothers Ilkan and Uzeyir Gulgun. While in Sirence, don't miss: Demetrius of Ephesis, the tiny gem of a jewelry shop presided over by renowned master silversmith Sedat Kanatroglu, who treats customers like royalty; Kirkinca Kece Felt Store; Sirince Koylum Sarapevi wine house; and traditional restaurants Ocakbasi, Cesmebasi and Sedir.

Sirince is a curious mixture. On the one hand, a peaceful, serene, spectacularly beautiful hill village surrounded by beautiful mountains and orchards, and on the other a tourist trap for tour buses which crawl up the hill and deposit their cargoes to wander through the main streets which have been transformed into a bazaar selling all manner of trinkets.

Fortunately, at the Hotel Kirkinca, you remain high above the fray, and in the evening and early mornings, before and after the day-trippers, you and the locals have the place more or less to yourselves, and it's one one of the loveliest places I've ever stayed in.

The Kirkinca is somewhat rustic in presentation, but all mod cons are present (except for a TV in the room, but in such a lovely place, that's a plus!). The welcome and care during our stay was very friendly and accommodating. The manager, Mustafa, in particular, went out of his way to ensure that we had what we needed. As we found everywhere in Turkey, free, fast wi-fi was provided. The breakfast was the best we had anywhere on our travels and is served in a glassed in terrace with a beautiful outlook.

If the test of a hotel is that the guest departs feeling refreshed and renewed, then the Kirkinca certainly delivered.

Although it is expensive for the standard of accommodation provided, the quality of the overall experience was such that we felt it was good value overall.

Sirince makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area. Selçuk is 20 minutes away by minibus, and Ephesus another 15 minutes beyond that. It would make a great base for exploring the region by car, but don't try and drive up to the hotel! The 'streets' are narrow, steep and roughly paved with stones.

A wonderful, beautiful place to stay. Our hosts arranged van pick up/return from Izmir Airport for my family of 5 and so began a peaceful, enjoyable 2 nights, 3 days in April. The rooms were quaint and comfortable (great jacuzzi in upstairs bedroom), the breakfast on back terrace was delicious and plentiful. Our hostess, Zeynep suggested, and escorted us to a lovely place for a great Turkish dinner. On our last day, Zeynep and Ilkan, the owner, showed us how to make felt rugs in their adjoining store. We loved the town (but steer clear during the few hours in mid-day when cruise ship tourists overwhelm the cobblestone streets and stores). Beautiful scenery from the mountaintop and easy to make arrangements for Ephesus Tour. Just writing about Kirkinca Hotel makes me long to return.

Room Tip: Upstairs bedroom has great jacuzzi and wonderful views

Don't expect butlers hanging around or high speed internet, but Kirkinca Hotel is the place to speed down and relax in an old village environment, filled with stories, slow food, old houses. At the same time it is full of surprises. We had the room with the private hamam! Furthermore Kirkinca is the place of superlatives. Extremely nice personnel, only Mustafa speaks English, extremely good breakfast, extremely nice view from the rooftop, extremely good food in the nearby restaurant. To make a long story short: paradise. We will certainly return to Kirkinca.
