Modern hotel. Built recently. Clean. Quiet. Friendly and helpful staff.
On arrival I opened the window of spacious room and marvelled at the view of the Hittite ruins on the hill four miles to the south.
Next day, thanks to being driven to the ruins by Abdullah Kekilli (manager of the cooperative Kilim rug shop 300 yards down the road) I wandered around the ruins for six hours (with picnic lunch provided by the hotel).
Abdullah also drove me the few miles from the hotel to the Yazilikaya rock inscriptions and also arranged a driver for the 20 miles to Alaca Huyuk.
A major plus of the Bashkent Hotel is proximity to Addullah’s small rug emporium, Kooperatif Arinna (which tour buses avoid because Abdullah refuses to pay commissions to the drivers) from which I purchased wonderful Kilim rug. Prices are excellent (much cheaper than Istanbul). Silk on cotton. Very light. Can fold and pack amazingly easily. Approx $300 per square metre.
Luckily I bought the rug I wanted the day before some Italian tourists (aware of Abdullah due to a complimentary article in an Italian camping magazine) arrived and bought seven rugs.More
