“Nice modern hotel, comfortable, clean and friendly”
Reviewed October 9, 2011

We stayed here in August 2011. I really liked this hotel. It was modern, clean and nicely done out. Our room had quite funky decor. There was also half decent wifi.

You don't get a lot of mod-cons: no air con in our room, no room safe (i used the hotel safe), no fridge and hot water was a bit hit and miss.

Breakfast was in a nice bright room, and was one of the best breakfasts we had during a month in central Asia: juice, tea, coffee, nice bread (more European) , cereals, dried fruit, milk, 3 cheeses, hams and salamis, fruit salad etc.

Did laundry, but not cheap.

I stayed here for one night. The hotel is very clean, nice room and the staff speaks english very well. The bed was maybe a bit too narrow (maybe 80 cm?), but definately the most comfortable bed I have slept in at any hotel in Central Asia!

The bad part was the dinner. Not only had they forgotten to prepare vegetarian food for me, but it wasn't good food when I finally received it. The icecream for dessert was probably the cheapest and worst icecream I have ever tasted. For this three course dinner they charged 20 euro. That is a rediciolus overprice everywere and especially in Kyrgyzstan!!

I will definately stay here again if I ever get back to Karakol, but next time I will eat somewhere else, that's for sure.

Karakol isn't a major tourist destination and there aren't many hotels. There are a few homestays and B & B though if that's your thing.

Hotel Amir is a new property(from 2006 I think) and the place is very modern. The rooms are comfortable and very clean. The hotel has tourist information for the town and internet access. The hotel also has its own power generator which unfortunately for the citizens of Karakol is a necessary thing. We didn't have dinner there but breakfast was good enough. The hotel was slightly noicy but not a big problem.

Situated just behind the university area in Karakol the Amir is a modern building in a quiet residential street. It is used by tour groups.

It is very clean throughout and the staff are friendly with good English.

Rooms were small with rather uncomfortable trendy furniture, bathroom was fine. However a major problem was noise as the building is basically a large barn so the heavy room doors closing, people talking and groups being given morning calls echo round the building and are very disturbing. Tour buses parked in the yard run up their engines first thing in the morning. It is really a very noisy place.

Breakfast was good. We had one dinner (you have to order in the morning and there is no choice). It was a very poor almost unpleasant meal and ridiculously expensive for what it was in a country with generally low prices. The restaurant up the road is much better on all counts.

This is a new hotel, apparently there is some Swiss ownership involved. It is very clean and contemporary - no carpets which made it a bit noisy, some nice local felt wall hangings on the walls. We had dinner here two nights, the first night there was a french tour group in and we got whatever they had, the second night our guide ordered "local speciality" for us which were enormous meat dumplings. You don't want to be a vegetarian in these countries where you are offered meat soup followed by some sort of meat.
The Swiss have obviously been teaching them to make desserts as this was the only place in three week's travel where puds were offered. There was also wine available with some small choice.
The breakfast was a buffet but you could order eggs cooked if you wanted and they apparently had a different porridge every day which we didn't try.

The town suffers from power cuts - during the day, and later on at night.

The hotel had a small terrace with flowers, and a garden at the back, but it was situated in a street of old russian type cottages with a hideous ancient soviet apartment block behind, but this is a small town in central asia where hotels seem to pop up in what seem to be unlikely places to us.
