Take a trip down memory lane in this small but cosy blues bar in this far from bustling ski resort. A quick evening tour of the bars and restaurants in Wagrain will usually reveal the usual serving of mindless, monotonous Euroslop, music reserved for people who want their sounds, pasteurised, homogenised and desensitised. Personally, I don't, so when we entered Republik Bar on Tuesday night, we were pleased to hear if not see, music played by real musicians, playing real instruments with not a computer programme in sight.
Wolfgang, the owner of the bar and friend of the Austrian ski ace Herman Maier will provide you with a warm welcome, and if you are lucky, a taste of his 'special schnapps
' which will warm the cockles of your heart as you listen to tales of international travel, great parties and the most important thing, enthralling music. If you are really fortunate you might even get to see or perhaps hold, the shattered remains of Herman's downhill trophy from 1999, which came to grief at a party some time ago in this veritable establishment.
A visit to Republik Bar is strongly recommended. It's a hidden gem. I have been coming to Wagrain for 25 years and he has been open for 23 of them and it was a surprise after all that time. And a pleasant one at that. Don't miss it.
