“Charming family run hotel, ideal for skiing holiday with children.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2012 via mobile

Recently stayed in the hotel with my daughter, son-in-law and fifteen month old grandson. The service we received far exceeded the three star rating. All of the staff from landlord to waiters were most welcoming and attentive. Food was varied and ample. The rooms were spotlessly clean, generous in size and and well appointed. The hotel is about 500m from the cable car station but the free bus stops outside. Lofer is a very pretty village and the ski area, although small, offers enjoyable skiing for all the family. This would be and ideal base for any family wishing to introduce the sport of skiing to young children.

Reading the previous reviews of this hotel we were a bit apprehensive as to what to expect. The hotel is on the outskirts of Lofer (by outskirts I mean 10 metres as Lofer is very small) on a road which leads to St Johann I think. You get a few passing lorries anyway.

Our room was fairly large and had 2 singles pushed together and there were also 2 single sofa beds if needed. There was a small dressing table with mirror and separate toilet and shower/sink area. A bath would have been nice but I think you'll be lucky to get one in Austria. The balcony had great views towards the mountains.

Breakfast was a small selection of cereals, breads, yoghurts, fried eggs and cold meats. You could also help yourself to tea/coffee and juice. At breakfast they ask for your choice for dinner. This was a choice of 3 dishes - 2 meat and 1 vegetarian. At dinner you could help yourself to a salad buffet then have soup of the day followed by your choice of main. We have to say that we thought the food was brilliant. It was a good portion, filling, hot and well cooked. The dessert to follow was even better and included cakes, pancakes, fruit with sorbet and other scrummy things! The waiter was so friendly and welcoming that it really made dinner that much better. If the waiter has the day off then the owner will serve you and let's just say that he probably hasn't attended any hospitatility courses recently. He was nice enough but obviously likes to run a tight ship and get on with it! The other staff were all really helpful.

There is a lovely sauna area in the basement. If you want a sauna you just need to tell reception in the morning and they will turn it on for you. The steam room was broken but the sauna was fab after a days skiing!

You can easily walk into the centre as it takes about 8 minutes but the ski bus stops at the hotel which saves your legs, especially if you have equipment to carry. However, walking back through the town after a day on slopes was a nice way to wind down, popping into the shops and cafe for a pretzel!

A bit about Lofer. We thought it was a real gem of a town. It's a small market town and very quiet so don't come here if you are expecting lively apres-ski. There are a a couple of cafes, bakeries and bars but all low key. You can walk through the town at about 9pm and you'll be the only one there! This suited us fine and we stocked up on some cakes and beer at the Spar to enjoy back in our room.

The ski area in Lofer is also fantastic. Again it's on the small side but perfect if you're in mixed ability groups and taking lessons. Lessons always start and finish at the same place so you can meet up for lunch etc. There is a nice mix of easy blues, hard blues (probably should be reds), reds and 2 black runs. The conditions when we were there were perfect although if it's a sunny day the lower slopes can get slushy and hence quite challenging.
Everyone we spoke to seemed to really enjoy Lofer but don't expect to see many Brits here - it's mainly a mix of German, Danish and Dutch. The lessons we had by Ski Schule Herbst were really good and better than previous ones we've had elsewhere. Also if you hire from their shop at the bottom of the piste you get to store your equipment for free there. It just makes everything so convenient!

Overall we would definitely go back to Lofer and stay at the Salzburger Hof. We truly had a fantastic skiing holiday whilst also managing to relax! As they like to say in Austria and Germany - SUPER!!

This is definitely NOT a 3 star hotel. Some rooms had television. Mine did not. No amenities--not even a small bar of soap. I did not have a bath mat. The hotel is on a main road and mostly very quiet, except several times large noisy vehicles passed, waking me up. Food was ok but more Spartan than other hotels I used.

The worst part was the management. The male owner was nasty and rude, not at all gracious or accommodating. He was cheap and greedy. He actually scolded the guests! Reservations were messed up for part of the stay. The female owner, his wife?, was very nice. In general, I have never seen guests so maltreated or a more disagreeable owner.

I would not stay here again and do not recommend this hotel to others.

My husband and I were cycling on the Tauern Bike Path in Austria last May- what a delight- when we arrived at the small town of Lofer, tired and without a reservation. It is shoulder season in May, so finding an available room would be no problem. We chose a hotel in a convenient location with a good view of the mts. The proprietor was unfriendly and took advantage of the fact we did 't speak German. He overcharged us for the room (I discovered this later when looking at a local tourism brochure), said he had no rooms available with mt views- not true, and he finally found us one when I insisted- and fed us a poorly (dinner was included) and insisted he could not bring us tap water, we had to purchase a drink. It's a shame, because the room with balcony and mt. view were lovely, and the restaurant had a pleasant ambiance. The host made it less than ideal.
