“An amazing experience”
Reviewed April 16, 2008

We stayed five nights at the Evason Hideaway at Zighy Bay. There were so many things which we found amazing and different starting from the pick up at Dubai airport. We were most impressed by our butler and room boy who were so eager to please, also being amazed by the nationalities of the staff, all of whom were obviously carefully selected.
We enjoyed our excursions (albeit pricey) and we were fortunate to have a sea front villa.
The hotel was certainly not full but we are not sure how the facilities, such as the bar and restaurant (especially the outside deli) will be able to cope with a full hotel.
During our stay a group from Volvo in Spain arrived - over 40 in number, and stayed three plus nights. They obviously dominated the hotel in terms of their numbers although they were kept separate by and large. We were disturbed by music from their Gala Night. Our view was that this was a Corporate group but the general manager said it was a "leisure" group who had stayed with Evason before!! Their behaviour was faultless but our concern was that such a group was not what one expected to find at a Hideway resort. No replies to our email to Evason HO have been forthcoming on this which is disappointing. Nevertheless, we may well return next year.

We stayed in Zighy for 14 nights for our honeymoon at the beginning of December. We flew first class with BA from Heathrow and actually were disappointed that the flight was so short!! We could have just moved in!

The arrivals experience was as described in the other reviews on here. Absolutely impeccable and made us feel like a million dollars. Truly indulgent when someone goes and gets your luggage for you and clears your passports through immigration. We got whisked through on a buggy and were quickly ushered into the waiting limo. We were a bit bewildered with the offers of cool towels, water, crisps, cool face masks, vibrating neck pillows etc from the driver but after a few kms we were completely chilled out - so much so we actually missed most of the journey in to Oman. We transferred to the 4x4 and met our butler Fayez for the first time.

The journey over the mountain to arrive at the resort was simply breathtaking and we were overwhelmed and a bit stunned when we first pulled up at the front door to be ushered to our villa. We had villa 17 right on the sea front - a deluxe pool suite villa. Totally amazing and faultlessly clean.

We were shown round to explain how everything worked and then we literally flopped for the rest of the day after a few mohitos in the bar by the main pool.

The manager of the 'LIFE' activities came to see us later in the afternoon and they offered us a free Dhow snorkelling trip because it was our honeymoon and as they were leaving our villa, a bottle of champagne was delivered. It took us at least 4 or 5 days to just take everything in and come to terms with how wonderful everything was.

We spent most of our time lazing by the pool but took the time to do the Sundowner trip to the Arabian Desert which we would absolutely recommend and we also did a Bargain Bonanza trip to Dubai and on both occasions our guide was the same man - simply phenomenal local knowledge and fascinating stories.

The title of the review gives a clue, but basically we are not going to complain about anything because our trip was fully comp because the resort was not yet ready and when you are not paying then you don't really have a right to complain about anything. Yes there were some blips and the odd thing that you spotted that could have been more perfect but the problem is that Zighy Bay presents itself as perfection so even the smallest of nonsensical things will show up while the resort is still being polished off.

We are both foodies and the meals served to us either in the restaurant or the bar were simply divine and the only downside was the increased waistline on departure!! The staff couldn't have been more attentive - we are not the types to misuse or take advantage of service but I can imagine that some more demanding types would have a field day testing out just how far the staff would go to keep a guest happy!! We had a bit of an incident with the paragliding (nobody's fault, simply meteorological issues!) but the staff rallied round and made us feel - if it were possible - even more like members of the family, they arranged a special meal for us exclusively on top of the wine cellar tower and really pulled out all the stops.

We quite happily slipped into a daily routine of brunch and then beers and snacks in our villa during the afternoon and we were blissfully unaware of any work going on to finish villas and facilities. We passed a few workers as we walked around who were undertaking work to finish off some villas round about and we literally wouldn't have known that they were there.

We would say that some of the prices for day trips were reaching the expensive side of things from what we saw on the brochures in our villa and yes, the wine prices are a bit OTT, but we did a wine tasting session with the Sommerlier and she was just completely amazing so we would almost forgive the price for the knowledge that it's served with!

We would love to go back to Zighy Bay once it's all finished and everything is up and running, but seeing as for most of our time we were literally the only ones there, we would feel it might be a bit crowded if we were to go back and there was more than two people staying!!!!! We really don't think we would be able to recreate the same utterly exclusive atmosphere as we had on our honeymoon so maybe we will branch out to another Six Senses resort to experience another aspect of such excellent service.

We cannot recommend it highly enough and forever, the memories of our honeymoon will be made that bit more special because they were formed at Zighy Bay!

From the VIP Meet at Dubai Airport to the departure 6 days later this was the experience of a lifetime.
Tucked on a secluded bay, individual villas give all visitors the privacy they may seek.
Fantastic staff tend your every need.
Food varied and excellent.

Hi!

We stayed at this wonderful resort for 8 night in the beginning of nov. 2007. It was not ready, which we were told before we arrived, but we had a wonderful stay.

The Villas har big, cozy, privat, and with a good outdoor shower - we loved the outdoor shower. We stayed in two villas. One nr. 57 (if I remember correct) - second row. Very nice Villa, and more than big enough. Then after a few days we were upgraded to a beach front Villa (number 20). It is very similiar from the other Villa, but it is a huge advantage to be in front. If you can, book the beach front.

We had some troubles with the transfer to the resort, but they did everything they could to make this good again. We got lots of free Champagne, and a fantastic dinner in our Villa. The Sommeliere, Maria, were with us the whole time, and winelovers like us had an excellent time. We talked to Maria nearly every day, and she is really a great Sommeliere with lots of interest in her work.

We had dinners "everywere" - villa (2x), in the bar (great - like to sit outside, and the waiter from Sri Lankan is just super!), inside the main restaurant, in the Deli (lunsj restaurant), by the pool, and on the beach. Superb!!!

The other staff we met was also very good! We were on a trip with two guys from Nepal up in the montain. I can really recommend this. The had great knowledge about the area, and we had great fun.

We would really like to go back there. The hiltop restaurant must be excellent, and since we didn't do the paragliding, we have to go back.

If you are into shopping this place is not the ideal place to go. I would recommend to have 1 or 2 nights for shopping in Dubai, and then go to Zighy Bay for relaxation.

PS: The weather in the beginning of november was superb. Not to hot, but hot enoughy to have eaving dinners outside:-)

One word - wow! The web site pictures do not do it justice - it is much better even than it looks!
This resort provides the best airport arrival experience we have come across. You are taken to a lounge whilst the team process your passports and collect your luggage and then fast track you to the 7 series BMW. This takes you to the mountains where you change to the 4x4 for the drive over the mountains - excellent start. Your first view of the bay is stunning.
We had a suite on the beach front (villa 20) and it was perfect. Fabulous rooms and a great pool - just the right size. Lots of other areas made this one of the best rooms we have stayed in. The buildings are styled like ancient traditional Oman houses and the whole resort has a great village feel to it.
As others have said, some rooms and two restaurants are not open yet and there is some building work, but you just dont really notice. When the mountain side restaurant (dining on the edge) opens in two months time, it really will be one of the most amazing restaurant views in the world. Food in the hotel was perfect and varied and I am sure the new restaurants will also be first class. Sea in March was a little cool, but with the very warm pool, who cares! This resort is so secluded it really is perfect with a stunning mountain backdrop to the fabulous beach.
If you feel like it - do the paraglider - I loved it and conquered my fear of heights! It is really great fun.
Spa was very good and the staff throughout the hotel are exceptional - they all try so hard to make you welcome. The staff all seemed really happy working for six senses. This is our first experience of Six Senses after various other 5 star resorts and we will definitely use them again - we will also certainly go back to Zighy bay - peace, seclusion and an exceptional resort - we just love it!

  • Liked — Exclusivity, rooms with pool, service and food - everything 5 star
  • Disliked — Wish we had stayed longer!

The location and getting there - we were met off our flight (flight-side) and taken to a lounge where we were given tea/coffee and pastries for breakfast while someone got our checked bags for us and cleared immigration for us; once that was done, we were taken (with no queuing) directly to a car and then to the resort; all of that was arranged by the resort; although we had asked for the speed boat arrival, it didn't happen (though we did get taken back on the boat ("speed boat" is pushing it) at the end - a nice 15 min trip rather than 30 mins in the car); when you get about 20 mins from the resort you transer into a 4WD which is essential for the bumpy ride through the mountains to the resort.

The setting - the resort is in the middle of nowhere, set on its own (save for a small fishing village) on a stunning 1.6km sandy bay and the mountains all around; nothing to spoil the sea views; truly spectacular

Building progress - although the resort officially opened on 15th Jan, it was nothing like finished when we were there: at least half the rooms were not open and some were still being built; Dining and Drinks on the Edge are not open; Bites has not even been begun; the marina is still being built; the tennis courts have not been started; the spa was being built; the gate to the property was only half built; the souk and the shop are empty; and the landscaping as you arrive looks like a quarry/building site. That makes it sound awful which it definitely was not: the noise of the work was minimal; what had been completed had been beautifully done; and if you didn't know that there were supposed to be other things available, you probably wouldn't really have missed them

Villas - we started out in a standard pool villa not on the beach front and were then upgraded (given all the above) to a pool villa suit on the beach front; the standard room was great and a very good size, with its own plunge pool and shaded/cushioned area outside plus unshaded area (until the sun goes behind the mountains) with excellent beach beds; sea view and no more than a minute to the beach; the pool villa suite was twice the size (e.g. 4 showers: 2 indoors and 2 outdoors) with a much larger pool (you could almost get some exercise in it) and opened directly on to the beach; it was simply amazing; well worth being on the beach front if looking at the sea and hearing it at night is your thing; all rooms have all the mod cons including an espresso machine

Style - the resort is incredibly stylish and immaculately detailed but in a very understated way; there is absolutely no bling here; it makes the Chedi look like it is trying much too hard and makes the Al Husn seem almost brash in its luxury; there are no lush carpets; no huge swaroski chandeliers in reception etc The resort is owned by the same guys who own Soneva Fushi and this maintains that bare foot luxury / eco style. That is not to say that you will want for any luxury - you won't - but it is a particular style

Food - in Dining on the Sand was excellent; breakfasts amazing (and can also be taken outside at Zighy's Deli or on the deck of your room) and mainly a la carte and brought to your table; at dinner you can eat from the general a la carte menu or the evening's a la carte menu; the only buffet is on arabian barbeque nights; the addition of Bites (a sea food restaurant) will be a huge plus; Dining on the Edge is clearly going to be very high end food with prices to match; a sort of once a trip, special treat

Wine - excellent wine list (currently 120 wines apparently set to rise to 400) at fair prices for this part of the world; mark-ups are basically 4 times London shop prices (i.e. not much different from good London restaurant prrices); particularly good range at the £20-35 mark; also good selection by the glass

Things to do - long list of things you can do at a price but we didn't get beyond our villa/the beach so can't really comment; but this is not a place from which you can go off on your own; it is in the middle of nowhere; other guests keep very much to themselves though everyone was friendly ; it is "hideaway" both in geography and philosophy

Main pool - nice but perhaps not as nice as Chedi or Al Husn (but we are not pol people); did not see anyone use it or lie around it; the villa concept means that people kept to themselves though that may change when the resort is fully open and full

Service - generally excellent service with only one or two teething problems as you would expect; but any problems sorted graciously and generously; villa butler a bit of a non-event but made up for by our superb in-villa attendant (really house keeping but worked his socks off doing other things for us)

Children - not really a kids resort but there were a number of children there; they do have a children's menu and some toys if you ask; set up is quite child friendly; we would seriously consider taking ours there

Compared to Chedi / Al Husn - we would go back to ZB any day of the week over those two; for us, not a single thing to prefer about them compared to this, even in its unfinished state; but the style is particular and others may prefer what the Chedi or Al Husn offer

This is a brand new Evason Hideaway hotel. In fact, it is not even officially open yet. It was originally supposed to open in November but was delayed by the typhoon and will now be soft opening in January (although they are taking some guests who had already booked before the delay). We were skeptical of coming given that the resort is not finished yet but we needn't have worried. While they are still finishing some of the villas, two of the restaurants, and the spa/gym, there is no construction noise and there is ample to do here without these. The location is stunning and dramatic with the rocky mountains almost meeting the sea. In typical Hideaway fashion, the hotel very much blends in with the surroundings and feels very luxurious in an understated, casual way. We are staying in a pool villa which is open plan and has a nice sized plunge pool and outdoor area (although next time I think I would splurge for the pool villa that is ocean front--but we have an ocean view from our villa). The beach is clean, private and very long. The staff is amazing and the service has been flawless. They have even graciously catered to our 16 month old son and brought him fresh milk everyday and entertained him in the restaurants. The food has been wonderful, a nice blend of Western and Arabic offerings. We will try the spa treatments tomorrow (in a makeshift location) and my husband will be going diving as well. Overall, the Evason Hideaway concept continues to impress me with their stunning locations and thoughtful design. It is truly a unique and memorable experience to be here and is easily combined with a trip to Muscat (the hotel picked us up there for an easy 5 hour drive) and/or with Dubai (we will leave from Dubai, an easy 2 hour drive).
