We booked the best rooms at both Golden Sunset and Paras in order to figure out where we wanted to stay for the week. After one night at each we decided on Golden Sunset because it was much quieter and the room was ocean-side with a patio as opposed to the busy family atmosphere of Paras. Rates were reasonable, and the international food was of good quality. Meals were served at your personal dining table on the patio of your room, overlooking the ocean and amazing sunsets. It was a serene environment. Staff was extremely helpful and I would highly recommend Golden Sunset to anyone who travels to Camiguin Island. They even provided free transport to and from the airport, whereas Paras charges expensive fees, for just about everything.

Now, on to the island itself. First off, there are no real beaches on the island itself (disappointing as I live in Thailand and expected more). Golden Sunset has a small black-sand beach which was better than Paras which has nothing. However, a short boat-ride out to the "White Sand Island" gives you your photo ops. Beautiful sand, crystal clear water, and good snorkeling. An even better place to go is Marinque Island Marine Park off the Southern coast of Camiguin. The beach is amazing, some jungle shade on the inside, and the Snorkeling/Diving was incredible! If I could, I would have stayed on that island the entire time! Highly recommended day trip! If you want to stay right on perfect sand, go to Boracay, but be aware that it is significantly more touristy. We chose Camiguin for it's quiet atmosphere.

Volcanos: The island has 7 volcanos none of which are active. We hiked to the top of the tallest one, hoping for a glimpse inside a crater, but only got the panoramic view. Not to say it wasn't enjoyable, because the rainforest is quiet and the view from the top of the island a solid photo op, but just be aware of what you're in for. 4 hours uphill.

Food on the island, wasn't anything to write home about. We took most our meals at Golden Sunset because they had the best international cuisine. Rented a motorbike to ride around the island. Highly recommended, takes about 2 hours. Took the plane in and out. Midsea Express. Good stuff.

Scuba Diving was really nice. Lots of corals and volcanic rock walls to find fish, turtles, and sharks. There is also a town about 10 minutes from Golden Sunset that has all the basic amenities. A big waterfall on the other side of town from Golden Sunset gives a nice photo.

Overall a great trip, and I would choose only to stay at Golden Sunset if I were to return again.

Room Tip: ocean-view is the best for sure and is a great value compared to the rest of the island

Very good value for the beach front room and food, recommended for couples and families traveling.

After my second attempt to booked online, I got a response from Ryan, the manager, and I was able to reserve a room by paying a deposit via bank transfer. He arranged for our pick up from the sea port, and at the resort, assisted in finding a motorbike for us to rent and use around the island.

The beach front rooms are spacious, with clean sheets and towels, good air conditioning, mini ref, and TV. The room could be improved by upgrading the interior design. The bathroom was built with sturdy fixtures, though water pressure could be better - in the end, we had to use the pail and dipper to shower. I also found their mirrors too high - obviously fit to the height of most foreigners.

I never cared much for chlorinated swimming pools when there are nice beaches to swim in, but judging from the laughter of kids who were splashing about on a Saturday afternoon, it could be a plus for traveling families.

The staff was very helpful and attended to us well, even when they had a lot of people over for a wine tasting and tapas event (offering 5 types wine and pica-picas). While Camiguin is not known for the night life, occasional events such as that offered by this beach club could be a come on for those who seek social gatherings. We took most of our meals here because the food was great (try the ribs with fries and tortang talong) and the avocado shake was heavenly. The only mishap we had on food was that I ordered bangus (fish) for breakfast and served pork tapa instead.

There was a power cut from 5-7PM on a Saturday, which they say is normal. We then opened our sliding door to welcome the cool sea breeze, and when darkness fell, they gave us a candle to light our room. Honestly, the power cut did not bother me at all.

After we had checked out, the staff kindly let us shower in one of the rooms before our trip back to Cagayan de Oro. In this trip, we learned that a weekend is not enough to explore Camiguin! We would consider staying here again when we return.

We booked from internet. They booked our hotel in Cagayan de Oro and even payed. Beacause we had just come from Manila and had to stay one night in that city. They trusted us. They arranged our transportation from the port to the Hotel. They also arranged island tours and sightseeing tours. Kind waiters and owner. Definitely good place for relaxing and taste delicious food.

Room Tip: Beach front rooms are better than pool front, i mean very less price difference but your balcony has an ocean view..

We were booked in for three nights, but opted to leave after the first night. Afterwards we found out that the quality was pretty standard for Camiguin, but we were hoping for something a little nicer. Perhaps we needed to adjust our expectations somewhat. The owners were very nice to us and were understanding of our desire to move to another resort. They even refunded us our deposit. In general the place is ok, but needs some work. Some new coats of paint and some newer furniture would spruce it up without costing a fortune. The pool obviously needs to be drained and repainted or cleaned up. The 'rooftop bar' really isn't used (there is no furniture in the rooftop area). We also found that the wifi wouldn't work in the rooms. Beds were foam mattresses that really need to be replaced and/or upgraded. If you don't mind roughing it a little and have reasonable expectations when considering that this is a mid-range place in an 0ff-the-beaten-path area of the philippines then you might find it suitable. If you are expecting any luxury you're probably better of going somewhere else.

On our second trip to the Philippines, we wanted to try a few of the less traveled spots. Before choosing this resort, I reviewed every hotel/resort in Camiquin. We arrived late in the evening and spent 7 nights at the Golden Sunset. We had a beach front room and went to sleep listening to the waves breaking on the beach. This resort is good value for the rooms, location and service. The resort is close to many of the other resorts and about a 15 minute motorella ride from the town of Mambajajo. More about the resort - the rooms are clean and made up every day. Yes, there are little ants but they are everywhere - even in Boracay - remember, you are in the tropics! The grounds were very tropical and the pool is well maintained. Food, from the restaurant, is good. Make sure you try the Curry. Sue and Phil are great hosts and treat each guest as special. As an aside, we had to overnight in Cagayan de Oro and we meet up with Sue and Phil and had great Thai food and explored a bit of the city. Sue, president of the Tourism Association is working very hard to bring information about Camiuqin as a destination to the travelers who visit the Philippines. Keep up the good work! The staff are friendly, very accommodating and JR thanks for taking good care of us. I checked out most of the other resorts when we were there and would definitely recommend the Golden Sunset to travelers who want to get away from the hustle and bustle of Boraracy and enjoy a laid back island life.
