This is one lady who knew how to live. The building and furnishings are almost beyond belief. And it's so big the crowds aren't really an issue especially if you have a good guide like TJ Travel who know when the best times are to visit.

We had an organised tour of Catherine's Palace and were not disappointed. This palace is a one hour drive from St.Petersburg. On arrival, it was amazing to see the buildings restoration after the war. It is a wonderful building, the blue colouring is to match the sky colour. Inside, ensure you visit a washroom before your tour. The only room not permitted for pictures is the Amber Room. It is truly amazing. It was definitely worth the visit, to make you get a glimpse of the summer palace that Catherine The Great resided in during the summer. When visiting if not on an organised tour, make sure to go early as it can get congested when local's visit.

Every room outdoes the last, it is truly opulent. In some ways it makes Versaille look like the poor cousin's house. Luckily we had a very skilled tour guide so we were able to line jump. The line seemed quite long. the history of the palace is interesting, including it being used as a Nazi headquarters, and then, of course, they destroyed it before leaving. there are some photos of how it looked
The amber room is crazy, it is rebuilt and no one knows where the original is. No pictures allowed in there. booties provided to protect the floor.
It is about 45 minutes from St Petersburg, I would recommend going with a guide, we really liked SPB tours.
