“Nice hotel, shoddy staff”
Reviewed July 23, 2013

Firstly, there's nothing wrong with this hotel. Although it's not as good as its counterpart in Campasak, the rooms are impeccably clean, modernly furnished and stylish. It was a little strange to have the toilet and showers in separate cubicles within your room, but can be seen to bring a certain charm. I doubt there's a better choice in Thakhek.

The staff are strange here. After asking where the complimentary tea and coffee was (listed in their welcome book and website), the reception staff responded "no tea and coffee". Once he called his boss (who said that we were due this), he then relented and agreed. An hour later, we repeated the same scene again. This seemed to keep happening.

His manager clearly had a clue, but the reception staff didn't. It's a nice hotel, but tiresome when you have to keep fighting the staff.

I got into ThaKhek after a hard days ride from vientiane, very tired and this was the first decent looking Guesthouse i rode past. instantly stopped there thinking "i dont give a $%^& how much it costs" i'm tired and need to rest.
i got welcomed at the front and given a welcoming frosty lime shake. (it was exactly what i needed.). I got told $25 for room with air con.. expensive but i didn't care.. i agreed to $25. The man at reception then ask me if i'm by myself, i said yes, with already agreeing to pay $25 He proceeded to tell me that i can have the room for a cheaper $22 because i'm solo.
The room was great, nice and clean, shower and toilet are separate. Restaurant downstairs is great, good food and friendly people.
Breakfast is included which was a decent feed.
I would stay here again for sure.

We stayed at Inthira Thakek during Lao New Year. Like for Champasack, the design of the rooms is just incredible, and the staff very understanding. The hotel is located downtown, so you just can walk a few meters to reach the Mekong side and enjoy a Beerlao at the end of the day. A great place to relax !

As I'm sure you're aware if looking for places in Thakhek there really isn't a lot of option available but its a nice place, friendly staff and clean.

We ate in the restaurant once also, that was nice too.

This is just a very nice place. Keep in mind that you are in Laos, so when evaluating the hotel see things in context. We found the staff very kind and efficient (manager and some staff fluent in English and Thai). Easy check in and check out. Lovely room (although no outside windows), very nice decor and setting, mosquito nets. It is a bit expensive to Lao prices, but it is one of the best places. As other reviewers have mentioned, traveling is expensive, drivers are money-hungry. The 'green' travel experience that french supporters are trying to market in the brochures is a joke; massive deforestation is ongoing, pollution is everywhere. so do take the guidebooks in the hotel room with a pinch of salt and you wont be too disappointed.
The hotel kitchen is great and serves different styles of cuisine, all prepared by local staff. We returned to the restaurant later, even if not staying at the hotel anymore. Breakfast was good, only the "orange juice" tasted a bit funny, likely diluted or sugar added, but then again, many places try this.
Will definitely return here when in town.

pro: the food was quite good and many travellers come there every eve from their stays. The room was clean and the beds were compfy

con: After a horrible bus journey we were to treat ourselves to a more upmarket stay and went to Inthira. The guy at reception was very unfriendly and if it hadn't been for the desperate need for a toilet we wouldn't have checked in. Most of the other stuff is also not very welcoming. The toilet was close to being blocked and the water only ran in small amounts.

I am sure you can get better for your money - especially better service. Haven't felt less welcome in any place we stayed in Asia for the last 3 months.

Dear Stefan,

I thank you for your review and i am glad that you enjoyed our room and appreciated the comfort of our beds.

Providing a great experience to our guests is what we aim for so when i read a review like yours, it is of course hurting ! I sincerely apologize for your bad experience when you checked in. Unfortunately, it is hard to find staff who speak English in Thakhek and what you took for rudeness what probably a lack of understanding from his side.

I will sit down with all my staff and read them your email so we can learn from this review and improve our level of service.

Best regards,

Thavone,

I stayed here two nights. If I had not reserved ahead I would never have got a room. While I was checking in many travellers approached the desk and were disappointed to find no vacancies.
This is a small place - a converted shop house - but the decor and atmosphere make up for the small rooms. The rainhead shower was nice although in a closet-like space, and there was no counterspace for toiletries. The bed was very comfy with a nice duvet. It was annoying that there were no English-language news stations available on the television. There are room safes for your valuables. The ground level restaurant is very good with a nice varied menu and obvously attracts non-guest travellers too. The open kitchen right behind the eating area allows you to see your food prepared in sanitary conditions. The location can't be beat, being a block from the Mekong in the midst of the small "historic" area. Tuk tuks congregate at the nearest corner, which is convenient. There were not a lot of other guesthouses in the immediate area strangely. The block the Inthira is on could benefit from some better businesses fitting travellers's needs. For instance, staff could not recommend any good nearby place for massage. I was disappointed in the Green Discovery offerings at the desk in the lobby. I wanted to do a day tour, but there are never any other people signed up to share the cost with. So you have to pay the full price of over $100 to do any day trip. Not in my budget. Likewise the district tourist office was disappointing. Most of the business in these tour agencies is multi-day treks with stays in minority villages. They are not set up for singles or couples wanting day trips.
