“one night was one night to many”
Reviewed October 5, 2011

It was late we were tired from a long journey, so an element of deperation was present.
First time ever we had to have a full airport type security check before we even got to the check in desk, it went down hill from there.
Long time checking in, once in room it was found to be noisey, dirty and lacked towels and a kettle, all basic really.
We opted for the Ala Carte as the buffet restaurant resembled a cattle market.
The meal was average at best the only good thing to reccoment would be the salmon sushi platter.
Service was less then average and the breakfast could only be described as discusting, orange juice should be made from oranges!

Room Tip: Don't bother

Dear 'Hubbleys'

We are sorry to hear that you did not have an enjoyable stay at Savan Vegas Hotel and Casino and hope to be able to learn from your comments in order to improve our guest experience.

Regarding our security measures, these are present for the safety of our patrons. We do however apologize for the slow check-in and the fact that not all the amenities were present in your room. This is not our normal standard nor the kind of guest experience we strive to achieve.

Our buffet restaurant can get bit busy at peak times but you also have the option to dine outdoors if you prefer to be more relaxed/secluded. We are also currently working on training our staff in order to improve our service standards.

Thank you for recommending our Salmon Sushi platter. We hope that if you have another chance to visit our hotel & casino, you will be able to notice the improvements which have been made in the meantime.

Thank you and best regards,

The Management
Savan Vegas Hotel & Casino.

Our second stay at Savan Vegas Hotel was much cheaper now we hold "Savan Vegas Member Cards" obtainable at the desk near the casino entrance. I quoted this card number when booking by email from Thailand and the "member's rate" of 1000b per night (inc breakfast for 2) applied instead of the sky-high rate quoted on the hotel website.

The rooms here are good with top notch fittings and toiletries. Very good value for Laos and by far the best place to stay in Savanakhet. It can be pricey (compared to Thailand) to eat here, so bring provisions or alternately it is a 150b / 15 minute jumbo ride into town for more dining options.

Free beer, soft drinks and coffee is available 24 hours on the casino floor (whether you are gambling or not) which is a bonus. Hot water is available to cater for those living off cup noodles ! Using the above mentioned "members card" also gets some discounts on shopping and a few other freebies.

Aside from a few odd foibles (the room deposit on check-in is required in cash, not via presentation of a credit card) this is a fun place to stay and the rooms are great value for money. The staff both within the hotel and on the casino floor are to be highly commended for being helpful, courteous and always ready with a smile.

Note: If you are arriving from Mukdahan in Thailand - locate the Savan Vegas office on the Thai side of the Freindship Bridge. They will provide free minivan transport across to the Casino, as well as making sure you aren't shaken down for bribes by the immigration/customs staff on the Lao side.

Room Tip: Some rooms overlook the Casino floor, others have views outside. Be sure to specify which you prefer...

The Savan Vegas is a fusion of hotel and casino. As we approached, the first thing that struck us was the group of four enormous, concrete elephants holding up a golden bowl. Behind them, the rest of the building’s front is taken up by a line of gigantic, white elephant heads – tusks, trunks, ears, the lot. We entered the building through an airport-style security check. This was completely pointless because, despite the machine bleeping like a Martian in labour, nobody checked anything. All prices in the place were in Thai baht, which was little wonder in view of the many massive coaches parked outside that had brought half of Thailand to the slots and gaming tables. The hotel rooms were clean and well appointed but the windows of our room overlooked the central gambling hall below - a rather interesting idea. I wondered whether the gamblers would pay any attention if I stripped stark naked and drew the curtains wide. The room had another unusual feature - a large clear glass window between the bedroom and bathroom. The purpose of this defeated us, unless a great number of the patrons are known exhibitionists. Happily, shutters allowed some privacy. After dinner, looking for a bar in the casino complex, we were directed to the karaoke area. To reach it, we passed open-doored rooms with sultry girls lolling about inside. Then we found a shady bar area similarly populated by more short-skirted ladies. The words "Shop" and "Knocking" jostled each other in my mind. The room opposite ours was occupied by a brigade of Thai or Chinese gamblers who came and went noisily - apparently either praising or blaming each other for wins and losses. And so the night passed. That was Savan Vegas Hotel at Savannaket with its 180 rooms, over 400 slots and 80 table games. Outside one has elephantism gone mad – and inside is a homage to the Million Elephant Kingdom overlayed with Elvis and Las Vegas. Yet it was good fun and worth staying here for the entertainment value of watching the gambling world go by.

Service was very sweet and efficient. Most servers spoke at least a little English. Hotel was very clean and upscale. This is worth a detour for a visit if you are vacationing anywhere in Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam or Thailand. 24 hour spa! (foot massage at 3 am anyone?) Beautiful pool that no one uses. Not as dimly lit as most casinos and not quite as noisy, so easy to gamble and socialize. Great expresso and pastries; substantial and tasty buffet - Thai chef. Could use more pictures on the walls; clearly still a new hotel.
