We enjoyed the food (red curry chicken, stir fried morning glory, stir fried vegies) and the setting by the Mekong. We recommend.

If you want to eat decent food with good service then Savan Lao Deam is the only place to eat in Savannakhet, it is located right on the Mekong river, the evenings are by far the best time, watching the sun cross the river and dissapearing over Mukdahan in Thailand. The F&B can be expensive, but the food is good and the service as well.

I was not greatly impressed when my wife and I ate here. The food was acceptable Lao food, but certainly nothing special, and the serves, especially the fish, were very small. The wine list was overpriced and they charged an excessive rate for corkage.

The Lao Derm is a floating bamboo structure and also has small boats that you can hire to have your food & drinks on whilst going upriver (with a driver).
The restaurant opened in 2008 and is a copy of its sister restaurant on the Nam Ngum river near Vientiane.
Good menu with lao favourites laap, grilled fish with bun & herbs, Or lam, fried Luang Prabang river algae, and also thai standards red curry, green curry, pad phakhao and others.

Savan Lao Deam is a large floating restaurant on the banks of the Mekong near the centre of Savannakhet. You get to it by walking down the jetty and across a pontoon.

It was bitterly cold by Lao standards (around 15 C) when we were there and the staff were wearing arctic gear but in spite of that they were very welcoming and we had the place almost to ourselves. The food was delicious, freshly cooked and very reasonably priced. It's standard Lao cuisine, and some of the dishes might seem a bit frightening to Westerners: Dancing (i.e. live) Shrimp, Fish Salad with Ant's Eggs etc. But we loved it.

As for the view, as their own publicity puts it: "The most beautiful sunset sightseeing with the hug of 2nd Friendship Bridge".
