“Poor value for money, dirty and not maintained”
Reviewed March 16, 2012

It is a shabby, dirty, down-at-heel hotel for which they are charging top money; 800 baht a night! That would get a decent hotel room in Thailand. The whole hotel is shabby and dirty. Everything in my room (101A) was old and needed maintenance. The hot water from the bath tap ran on my feet while the cold water came out of the shower hear. No bath mat and a very slippery floor. Toilet ran constantly. Aricon didn't work and had a very noisy extractor fan running all the time AC was on. If you can find somewhere better I advise to avoid this place. Unfortunately the other places we looked at before booking in here were even worst. Only thing that did work was the TV! The whole town of Savannakhet was much the same, down-at-heel and dirty with the local people very unhelpful This place is out of the dark ages so unless you have to come here for a visa best avoided!

Room Tip: Find another hotel. Or better still stay in Thailand

Seems like one of the snazzier options for accommodations in Savannakhet.

Some things I appreciated:
- Daytime staff were lovely and actually smiled - I found this to be rare in Laos
- Free wifi (albeit, just in the lobby)
- Value for money

Some things I felt could be improved:

- There was a party going on next door until after midnight; music was so loud it could have been in the room with us. Not sure if this happens every night but might be good to ask for a room away from the noise.
- The promised hot shower was not so at all. The water was cold until a staff member arrived 20 minutes later with some tools, and even then it was only lukewarm. We'd just had a motorcycle accident and hot water was one of our criteria, otherwise we wouldn't have minded as much.
- A shower curtain is an ingenious invention, and not very expensive – makes for a nice dry bathroom after a shower
- Most annoying: the free wifi was awesome, but it’s only available in the lobby. There’s only one area with an outlet to plug a laptop, so we were sitting there one evening. But staff members were watching a TV show on the TV inexplicably set up right next to the front entrance, at an obscenely loud level of volume that just seemed to get louder minute by minute. We were actually trying to Skype with family at home to announce to them that we’d just gotten engaged, but couldn’t even hear! We moved to another (slightly less loud) spot. By the time the program was finished, a staff member was passed out on the sofa where the plug was. It was eventually turned down but none of the evening staff spoke English so it was a challenge. Not a huge fan of hotel staff treating their workplace like their living room.

Would probably stay here again if improvements were made.

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the noise from parties at night.

Look like big outside but very dirty. Once is enough.

I guess the fact that this hotel is no 4 in the list is evidence of the fact that there are not many good hotels in this town. One night was sufficient! The water was only marginally warm and the staff not very interested in the problem or indeed in any service. The breakfast was very poor and not a smile from any of the staff! One does not expect 5 stars in a provincial town in Laos but this hotel seemed not to care much what impression it created. There was a small charge for internet and the machines appeared not to support cookie enabled browser as we could not get into our email. Avoid if you can find better here!

I stayed at the Hoong Thip recently, being a regular visitor to Savannakhet. Basically the hotel is "all front" - it looks relatively grand from the outside and money has been spent on the reception area to create an illusion of grandeur.
Beyond that however, it is poor, and at $25 it compares badly to other local accomodation available for $10-12.
The rooms are big but empty, with some home made plywood funrniture with warped and sticking drawers and doors. The room was full of mosquitos and hadn't been used for a while as it was dusty and adorned with spider webs in the corners. No bedside light so you have to go to the door 10m away to switch off. Breakfast was in a depressingly empty restaurant with waiting staff staring blankly at you constantly. Reception staff were equally vacant and unwilling. Give it a miss - lots of better palces around for half the price.

When we came back from 3 days trekking we did not want to go back to the very basic guesthouse we had stayed at earlier, so we ended up at the Hoon Thip. We had planned to stay one night, but extended our stay to 2 nights as we found its comfort & cleanliness a welcome change after the trek.
Our room was in the new part of the hotel (don't go in the older part which is not so great value); good AC, satellite TV, fridge; everything spotless, abundant hot water. For 25 U$ a good breakfast for 2 was included.
Nothing particularly charming but good comfort & value; they also have an excellent restaurant (same name as hotel) around the corner.
