“Opened in 1824”
Review of Carolin Gate

Carolin Gate
Reviewed September 9, 2012

In the city walls this fifth gate, Carolina’s gate, was opened in 1824 so citizens had access to the Thaya Valley and Karolíniný sadů (paradise garden, orchards). On the Northern, Eastern and southern side of the city were three zones of walls, moats and reinforced by massive round or square towers, to defend the western slope of the Thaya valley a strong and high wall with many towers was sufficient. However, as modern defensive method against an armed enemy these fortifications became virtually useless, it lost its importancy so first half 19th century the defensive belts were dismantled, moats filled and converted to city parks which do surround almost half of the city.
