We have just spent three nights at River Cottage and received a lovely welcome from John as we got out of our car - this set the tone for our whole stay. Both Gilly and John made us feel very welcome.
Our room was immaculate, with a most comfortable bed and the breakfast was excellent with plenty of choice.
We had not been to this area before and enjoyed our visit very much - lots to see and do and we especially enjoyed our walk through Monsal Dale and our day spent at Chatsworth House (Farm shop at Pilsley also worth a visit).
It was an easy walk into Ashford village (torch was provided in our room) at night for our evening meal (Can recommend the 'Early Bird' menu at Ashford Arms Hotel).
We hope to return and will certainly book again at River Cottage.

Room Tip: Loved our room (light, airy, and warm) which overlooked garden and river and although not en-suite we had a bathroom to ourselves on opposite side of corridor, which was not a problem. Although room is near the road we heard no traffic noise due to triple glazing.

My husband and I got away from it all for our honeymoon and spent 4 wonderfully relaxing nights at River Cottage. Warm greeting, wine ready and nothing was too much trouble. Gilly & John have thought of everything. Bathroom well stocked with a number of items you might need, bed very comfortable and maps etc ready for browsing. Breakfast prompt and fresh and nothing was too much trouble. Hope to return for our 1st anniversary and would be happy to recommend to anyone that wants peace, quiet and comfort.

Room Tip: Not all rooms are en suite. We had the end room and it was very quiet, no passing traffic.

We visited this B & B this weekend for our wedding anniversary. It's a beautiful place!
Gilly and John were very welcoming hosts who immediately made us feel at home and that nothing was too much trouble. They are very knowledgable about the area too and gave some great tips. Although the property is on the A6, the traffic can barely be heard as the windows are triple glazed. Fresh air is pumped into the rooms so they are not stuffy either. Absolutely immaculate with everything you could possibly want and need and the breakfasts are amazing. We will definitely book to stay there again if we are ever in the area. Thanks so much!

I agree with previous reviewers - the freshly cooked breakfasts with local ingredients are a treat, the couple who run the B&B are the most hospitable and helpful you can imagine. There's fresh milk in the communal fridge for your tea and the rooms and bathrooms are immaculate, as pictured on the website. Very comfortable beds and beautiful antique furniture. My only one very small comment is that it would be nice if the guest living room were more comfortable and welcoming. The funiture in there - in the words of another reviewer I agreed with - did not encourage relaxing. However such a communal space is not by any means normally found in B&Bs so that's only a tiny point. For the price of a room (around £100) this is a non-issue.

Room Tip: One of the rooms isn't an en-suite but has a bathroom across the corridor.

My wife and I have just returned from a wonderful 2 night stay at the Cottage. Upon arrival John helped to carry out luggage and proceeded to give a very helpful insight into the local attractions. Our room was beautifully presented with nice little touches setting it apart from your average accommodation.

John and Gilly were fantastic hosts, friendly and informative without ever being intrusive. The breakfast was very nice, both beautifully presented and a good choice to cater for all tastes. We fed the trout in the River at the bottom of the garden. This was a wonderful experience, something I would recommend to anyone. The Cottage is an ideal location for visiting Bakewell and Chatsworth House. My wife and I would definitely stay at River Cottage again and I would recommend to anyone who wants beautiful accommodation in a picturesque part of the country.
