Set amidst beautiful countryside alongside the river Wye, in a small but slighty uninspiring village.

We were warned that our room was one of their smallest, that was true. The room was small and not well laid out or well decorated. There was fruit and sherry provided as well as tea and coffee making facilities. The fresh milk was in the ice bucket but there was no longlife for the next morning. The room smelled like a used ashtray even though it was no smoking. We decided it was the odour of the wood treatment on the roof beams (from which the spider arrived).

We appreciated the bathrobes but the bathroom had no place to rest personal possessions.

The welcome and service were polite and formal, if a little stiff - morning checkout manager was charming.

We ate in the restaurant. Having noticed many non-residents reading the menu outside the hotel during the afternoon we were surprised how quiet it was on a Saturday night. It may be that £44.95 for three courses is fairly pricey. The wine list is extensive but the prices are quite toppy. Amarone della Valpolicella for which we paid 30 euro beside the Grand Canal in Venice last month was £50.

The servers wear white gloves which reflects the pretentiousness of the restaurant. The food is of modest quality and not, in my opinion, worth the price; compared with several Michelin starred restaurants we have visited. The potato cakes were good and the chocolate pave (can't type accents). We did not enjoy the mussels, which are usually a favourite.

Bed was comfy. Newspaper arrived lateish.

Cooked breakfast OK except for a nearly burnt black pudding. The 'freshly baked croissants' were, for us, inedible.

Parking at the hotel is rather limited. A fellow guest had to park his new Bentley in the middle of the driveway. If I could afford a lovely car like that I would stay elsewhere. Overall, a once in a lifetime visit we have decided.

Delightful hotel in a quaint village. Rooms were spotlessly clean with extra touches such as decanter of sherry and chocolates. Thoroughly recommend it. Food was also top notch in the restaurant and breakfast was great. Great attractions such as Chatsworth House nearby.

The staff can't do enough for you, the rooms are outstanding and the food in the restaurant is to die for. Situated in a very peaceful village, it was quite simply the best hotel Ive ever stayed in. I would recommend it to anyone. Worth every penny!
