“A hidden gem”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

We found this little gem after searching all the other accommodation around Bakewell. From the first telephone call, every member of staff that we spoke to was extremely polite and courteous.
Check in was very swift, the rooms were wonderful, nuts, fruit, chocolates, sherry plus tea and a cafetiere of coffee in the room. We were in two of the garden rooms and had the weather been warmer would have been lovely to throw the doors open and enjoy the garden. The village is very quiet, had we had more time would have been nice to explore the village.
Despite the website and confirmation letter stating no children under 16, they were very accommodating and welcoming to our daughter.
We didn't eat in the hotel, but went to meet family in Bakewell so unable to comment about the restaurant.
Breakfast was waitress service and there was plenty of choice, which makes a change. our daughter asked for a bacon sandwich, which came with three rashers of bacon and two big slices of toast. I opted for fresh fruit salad followed by smoked haddock, whilst the other half went for the traditional breakfast. Toast was also offered and was accompanied by croissants.
Other choices included continental breakfast, cheeses etc.
Checkout was equally swift and courteous. Would highly recommend this hotel, it does have a sister hotel at Monsal Dale.
Please do try it out, you'll be pleasantly surprised.

My husband and I were staying here as it was our wedding anniversary. We had passed it so many time going through to Sheffield to see daughter at University but never had time to stop!! We promised ourselves we would stay one day and also visit Chatsworth House nearby.
We made it In July this year!! It was everything we had imagined it would be!
On arrival we were greeted by very friendly staff who showed us to our room. Our room was very nicely appointed and had lots of little extras that show attention to detail.
Tea, coffee and homemade biscuits were provided but aswell at these usual items there was a small decanter of sherry and a bowl of nuts which was a nice touch and very welcome as a relaxing aperitiff before a super meal in the restaurant.
The food in restaurant was excellent! Nothing was too much trouble and majority of ingredients locally sourced!
All staff very helpful and accommodating. There are other local attractions like Chatsworth House and local walks like Monsal Head really close by.
If you were staying in the hotel and didnt want to eat in the Hotel every night, the Village has some great pubs for a change also with good wholesome food!
The only critiscism that my husband had was that he felt that the mattress was a little lumpy for his liking. I did not have a problem with it.

Room Tip: Ask for upgraded room. A little more expensive but good value and well worth it!

I staid in this hotel saturday we booked it last minute after a google search and it is one of the best finds ever I totally fell in love with the place, it is like home from home lovely touches in the bedrooms biscuits sherry fruit water every thing you need or want, the bedroom had french doors so you could sit outside in the morning, we arrived after 10 so missed dinner but the staff were so lovely they made us a platter of sandwiches with crisps, breakfast was very good and the grounds and surrounding area is breathtaking I will be going back next time for a long weekend, just a wonderful place.

Room Tip: I staid in the orchard room, they are all named after flowers lovely but maybe the bed was a little...

Very charming small hotel with proper English hospitality. The duty manager engaged with clients and new every ones name. We stayed in a first floor room which was as the web site shows. Comfortable, great bed and every attention to detail. Tea facilities, I won't say any more just be pleasantly surprised.
Ground floor rooms have an out side door with a table and chairs.
The exceptional standard and quality of food, service and accommodation were all worth an extra star. You can see the effort the owners go to by the care and attention which even applies to the garden and building.

Room Tip: I would expect all the rooms are good.

From the moment you approach the hotel it's a wonderful, the grounds by the river, the building, good car parking, when you walk in you feel at home! Friendly receptionist, very quick check in, the room was a garden room, just as described, with little extras that make all the difference sherry/nuts/chocolates & fresh fruit, your own outside table through the patio doors. Homely furnishings, the bathroom sink could do with a little attention, there was a crack and the seal round the back was black, but otherwise very clean.
We went for a walk in the afternoon when passing the bar we noticed there were no pumps at all NO draught beers or larger! in a 14 room hotel! they only sell bottles! We have been in smaller hotels that still have draught, so we had to go into the village pub to have a couple of beers before dinner! Also the bar is very confusing all the bottles are sideways on metal racks, so you can not see what there is to offer to drink!
7pm came we dressed for dinner, sat in the bar HAD A BOTTLE! then we were told there was only us in the hotel that night, it was so quiet, no music. just the receptionist that doubled as the waitress. Lovely dinning room, good service, excellent food, but the waitress/receptionist was chatting to us all through the meal, which is not very good it was a meal for three not two!
Breakfast was lovely and well served. Would go back but may just have B&B have have a meal in the pub, so we can get a proper drink.

Room Tip: garden rooms are good

My husband and I stayed here for one night on Saturday, 14th July 2012. From the minute we walked into the hotel it felt like home. Check in was quick and efficient and we were showed to our beautiful garden room. It was spacious, clean and had french doors leading out to the garden where we had two chairs and a table so it was nice to sit out.

Dinner in the evening was superb together with service. The quality of cooking was exceptional. Fantastic wine list.

Breakfast was again superb and everything cooked to order.

We were so impressed with the Riverside House Hotel and its staff that we have booked for another one night stay in August.

Once again a big thank you to everyone for making our first stay here so enjoyable.

This is a beautiful, small and intimate hotel in a lovely village. The rooms are delightful and the extra touch from Dee on reception was very welcome, sherry, fruit, cookies and chocolates. The breakfast was lovely and ordered to individual choice. We didn't eat dinner there as it does not do a la carte and we weren't up for a six course £45 a head banquet. However the two pubs in the village both offer food albeit for different tastes. We ate in the Bulls Head. Delicious though pricey. The Ashford Arms had a more extensive menu, more pub type food. Ashford in the Water is a great base for lovely walks and touring the area.

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to a garden room.
