“Our First Stay At The Riverside And Will Return”
Reviewed July 15, 2012

My husband and I stayed here for one night on Saturday, 14th July 2012. From the minute we walked into the hotel it felt like home. Check in was quick and efficient and we were showed to our beautiful garden room. It was spacious, clean and had french doors leading out to the garden where we had two chairs and a table so it was nice to sit out.

Dinner in the evening was superb together with service. The quality of cooking was exceptional. Fantastic wine list.

Breakfast was again superb and everything cooked to order.

We were so impressed with the Riverside House Hotel and its staff that we have booked for another one night stay in August.

Once again a big thank you to everyone for making our first stay here so enjoyable.

This is a beautiful, small and intimate hotel in a lovely village. The rooms are delightful and the extra touch from Dee on reception was very welcome, sherry, fruit, cookies and chocolates. The breakfast was lovely and ordered to individual choice. We didn't eat dinner there as it does not do a la carte and we weren't up for a six course £45 a head banquet. However the two pubs in the village both offer food albeit for different tastes. We ate in the Bulls Head. Delicious though pricey. The Ashford Arms had a more extensive menu, more pub type food. Ashford in the Water is a great base for lovely walks and touring the area.

Room Tip: Try and upgrade to a garden room.

The hotel has a delightful setting on the banks of the River Wye. It is built in the local limestone, tastefully furnished and well maintained. The restaurant is comfortable, well furnished and the tables are well-spaced. Service is bisk and polite. The menu is composed mainly of traditional English dishes and is priced at £24.50 for three courses plus coffee and petit fours. My ham hock terrine starter was a large portion, competently herbed but in need of a contrasting texture. The chicken breast was served with a modest sauce, miniature yorkshire puddings, roast potatoes and a choice of boiled/steamed veg. My desert was apple and rhubarb crumble with custard. Cofee and petit fours were delicious. There was a marked reluctance to accommodate my preference for smaller portions of lighter food and this will deter me from returning.

I would just like to say we had a really, really lovely lunch today at this hotel. We couldnt fault it. The food was lovely and the service was excellent, it is a lovely comfortable hotel and we will definitely be visiting again in the future. Cannot understand any negative reports about this hotel restaurant. Seriously thinking about staying there sometime although we dont live far away. Also, why has no one mentioned the ladies loos, with the floral toilet , brilliant.

The hotel is set in a beautiful location and our comfortable, well furnished room had views of the garden and river.
Though small, the room had plenty of storage space and a range of "treats" such as chocolates, nuts, fresh fruit and sherry. Both the room and en suite bathroom were immaculately clean.
The staff, without exception, were welcoming, and friendly. Nothing was too much trouble.
The food in the restaurant was consistently excellent starting with the pre dinner hors d'oeuvres which were served in the comfortable lounge.
We had an excellent two night stay and we intend to return in the future.

Room Tip: Most rooms have garden and river views.

It was wonderful "al fresco" weather and we decided to have tea and sandwiches at the Riverside
which to be fair is in a very nice setting, in the very pretty village of Ashford in the Water. Having eaten in the village tea room in the past, we decided to try the Riverside despite the obvious extra expense - we are happy to pay extra providing we get "value for money"

So, a simple request for one sandwich without butter (emphasised) was either ignored by the waitress or by the kitchen. I am unsure whether the hotel bar has draught beer available, but my request for a "pint" of bitter was met with a nod but a large bottle of Old Speckled Hen arrived which tasted as though it had been left outside in the sun. Did we complain? No. Will we go again? No. It's back to the Aisseford in the future for better service, at a fraction of the price

Nice approach to a nice looking house in a very attractive location, pity about the road noise but they can't help that. Welcoming girl booked us in but did not offer to help with the luggage. The room was small but seemed smaller due to the amount of furniture, we had to move the furniture to open a window and then had to shuffle around. The bed was more of less hidden under cushions. Lots of bits such as a a small bowl of fruit, nuts, 2 chocolates and a small decanter of sherry. The bathroom badly needs updating, the taps are to small for the basin which is old and worn and the toiletries of very poor quality. Restaurant, very attractive with good food and good service and a very nice bottle of Bordeaux, it helped make up for the room.
Would we stay again? Yes, maybe but only if we couldn't find somewhere better.

Room Tip: We had a garden room. Maybe the upstairs rooms are roomier but they are also dearer.
