“Newbie at yha”
Reviewed April 10, 2014

First time I've ever stayed in a yha and I'm fast approaching fifty. What can I see except it was a fabulous experience. Location is beautiful, amble parking. Exceptional staff who were courteous , friendly and very knowledgeable about local area, nothing appeared too much trouble. Room was small and basic but that's what I expected. Showers were hot, clean and available. Food good value for money and very edible. Appeared to be all age ranges staying there. Children visiting on school trips were very well behaved and I didn't hear any noise after 9 o'clock. Would certainly recommend to anyone looking for a cheap break away in a rural location with a multitude of outdoor activities. I will definitely visit again

Room Tip: Some ensure rooms are available

Neither my wife nor I knew what to expect fom our first visit to a YHA hostel - we were a bit apprehensive, but overall things were OK.

One of the problems with YHA booking is that there is very little information about where you are going to stay. For instance, is there any parking, what are the check-in times and what are the rooms like. So, you go guessing what awaits you.

The staff were excellent. The food was good and good value. The rooms were very cramped and we had bunk beds. Cleanliness was OK. Showers (shared) were acceptable, even if they were on a different floor. Location was excellent.

The only real issue I had was an easy and obvious one to put right, but when I queried it I got little more than a shrug of the shoulder. We are a couple in our sixties staying in a hostel that is fairly large. So, why give us a room in a part of the hostel other wise occupied by a group of 37 teenage kids who were obviously going to be very noisy. The rooms are wafer thin, which doesn't help. I am surprised that they don't segregate guests so that those who are likely to be quiet are given rooms away from those whose occupants are likly to be (and were) noisy.

Room Tip: Ask for a quiet room and try explaining to the staff that teenage groups are likely to be noisy.

Hello,
Your review raises a good point regarding the mix of guests that we have. I'm sorry that your observations regarding the group in residence did not meet with a slightly more positive response but, with groups in residence in all of our buildings at the time of your visit, there was, unfortunately, no group-free building in which to place you.
I would always recommend booking directly with us in term time, midweek periods so that we can give you the most accurate picture of our occupancy & attempt to manage the situation to best effect. Please feel free to ask these kind of questions regarding available accomodation & we will undertake to be as informative & honest as possible.

I thought the hostel was in the village. I was wrong, so I had a fifty minute walk - in the dark with a bad foot - to get this isolated hostel.

It was worth the walk! The staff were so very friendly. The hostel was clean, and the facilities excellent.

If you are bored you can play find the TV room, you will be kept busy for a while.

Was supposed to be going to Edinburgh but arrived day late for our pre booked train! So as a last minute alternative decided to go walking in the peaks. Edale is an excellent place to stay as there are lots of fantastic walks in the summer it attracts hoards of people but first weeks of December youth hostel and surrounding area is very quiet which is great for a peaceful couple of days. Hostel is looking a bit dated now but we were given a room which had a double bed bunkbed and internal bathroom so could not complain it was a very clean and warm. Self catering kitchen facilities were a bit poor compared to other hostels we have stayed in but for the price what can you expect.

Room Tip: Second week in December till late jan good time youth hostel not full of school groups so you could...

Thanks for the comments regarding your stay.
You are not alone in considering our facilities 'a bit dated' or 'a bit poor' but I am glad to report that we are currently in the midst of a significant refurbishment of the whole property which will transform all public rooms, bedrooms & the self caterers kitchen with huge improvements of both appearance & functionality.
We do have some availability over the summer but you are quite correct to point out that the winter months offer the possibility of a much quieter opportunity to sample our new facilities & invariable at a significantly reduced price.
Hope to see you again this December.

Stayed one night on 9th May as part of a walking group. Staff were welcoming and friendly. Our room was not shared with anyone and was functional and at the top of a long set of steps outside. This was not a problem for us but I'm sure it could be for others. Room was comfortable but toilets were down some stairs and a little way away from the room. All had a good nights sleep.
We were up for an early breakfast and we were very thankful we were. Just as we were being served our breakfasts, a large group of children on a football tour decended on the dining room and suddenly the queue was stretching out of the dining room, across the hall and part way up the stairs. Quality of breakfast was good.
This is quite obviously a busy hostel and caters for large groups, it also provides reasonable accomodation for smaller groups but has no frills!

We took our son here with a group of his 9 year old friends, for his birthday. The room we were given wasn't great, but the beautiful landscape, space for outside play, grassy hills to climb up and roll down made up for it. The games room is big and has table tennis, table football and connect4. The interior of the hostel is grubby and needs refreshing....but the staff were very helpful and friendly, even lighting the birthday candles for us and dimming the lights for "Happy Birthday".

Room Tip: Guess the rooms in the new wing are better than those in the old..
