“A pretty nice place.”
Reviewed September 5, 2010

This was my second time in Naxos and Aghia Prokopios particularly. I really enjoy Aghia Prokopios as it has a lot to offer and is the closest beach town to Chora.

Colosseo Star is a very nice facility. Our room was spacious, bright, air conditioned and clean. While the bathroom was clean, it was cramped and there was no shower and not even a real bathtub. There was a shower head attached to a flexible hose and you were supposed to sit in the small tub (seat built-in) and wash yourself. It was difficult to not spray water everywhere...including your towel and the toilet paper. Bathing here was a real drawback.

When I booked the hotel, I knew that it was not right in town. There were two routes into Prokopios, either past the drying lakes (which in the wet season would not be possible) and then along the beach or up the dirt road and then down the paved road (no pedestrian walkway here) and into town.

Breakfast was also supposed to be available...instead we received some kind of pastry each morning (if they saw us). This was not too much of a burden as we went to my favorite cafe in town.

The staff was very friendly and I can find no fault with them. There are several Colosseo facilities and one night on our way back to the Star, we were waiting for the bus when George went by in the Colosseo van, he picked us up and took us back to the star.

The Star also has a very nice pool.

While I would not recommend the Star, I would say that it is a nice place overall, but for location and the bath.

Great apartments. Cleaned daily and with nice pool and kids play area. Beach, restaurants and shops are about five minutes walk.

What made this place fantastic was the service. Free collection and drop off from the port by George followed by amazing hospitality from his wife Maria. On about the fifth day she presented us with a free cake. Another one came along two days later and then it was every day until our final day when we had drinks, lunch, cakes and even a local candle as a gift. Her English isn't great, but she is the nicest hotel owner I have ever met.

Naxos itself is a lovely island. The beaches are fantastic, the water clear and calm. There is a shipwreck you can snorkel over in Prokopios and a lovely restaurant at the far end of the beach. Agia Ana is 10 minutes walk away and has tavernas directly on the beach.

I would definitely recommend Naxos and the Colosseo to anyone with kids. We were tempted by the properties on the beach, but the bars and restaurants make it a bit noisier (this is by no means a party island though) and being just a couple of hundred metres back meant that cicadas where the noisiest thing.

The only downside is that the quickest way to the beach and town is across a causeway over salt lakes. This is perfectly OK, it's dry and solid and many cars drive across, but it is a bit "odd". You can go via road instead which takes a couple of minutes longer, but the salt lakes actually became quite fascinating and we almost always went this way.

If you need Internet, it's free, but you need a laptop with Windows as the wireless wouldn't work on phones (one's that normally use wi-fi) as you need to logon to a provider.

My wife and I stayed in this fine hotel for 5 days at an affordable rate. They provided outstanding service in all areas with clean well maintained rooms and well maintained surrounding areas. The walk to the beach took approx 5 to 6 minutes and it is an open beach where if you desire to go full nudity you may. Local shopping for supplies or transportation or restaurants are all within walking distance.
The hotel is located off the main road and if driving there from the ferry or airport is a little difficult to locate. We called and they came to us and we then followed them to the hotel.Could use a sign on the main road. The day we left there was a canx of our flight and we simply called them and they came and picked us up and took us to the port to catch the ferry to the mainland. Very helpful staff and very friendly willing to do anything for you within reason. Had a very clean pool and drinks available at certain hours. Very informal Would stay again and hope to do so

We found the hotel online, but did not booked it. When we arrived in Naxos, we found the hotel owner with the hotel sign and asked about the price of a room per night. We got the price considerably cheaper than we saw it on the internet. Maybe because it was outside highsesson, or because of the financial crisis!
We drove with the owner out to the hotel and saw the room and pool area, and said yes quickly. There are only 10 but comfortable rooms with bath and small kitchen. There was not many people, so we had almost the pool area to ourselves. Breakfast can be purchased at the pool house for 5 euros. But every morning we bought our breakfast in a supermarket about 7 minutes away. The pool is big and beautiful. There is also a basketball ground. The hotel is relatively close to the beach, but you have to go through a couple of smelly little red lakes to get there. But the beach is really super. The hotel is located just outside the Agios Prokopios "city", following a samall road. You have to go about 7-10 minutes to get into the "city" where there is some supermarkets and many good cafes and restaurants. Cleaning was good, and the host were so nice. Got both ouzo and gift when we said goodbye :-)

At the moment i booked was the cheapest place in agios prokopios. POSITIVE: great value for money, clean, ok size studio, comfy bathroom (shower only), balcony with table and chairs for breakfast with seaview, collection, to/from port or airport, friendly staff, beatiful swimming pool (if you really need one) surrounded by green and with free umbrella and sunbed, air conditioning ... honestly anything else that is not in the negative! NEGATIVE: unfortunately the location, if you want to go to "town" (google map gives wrong location) you can choose between a circle through a road with cars and without pavement or a circle across two salty lakes (that we called "swamps") and then through the beach. Both options are not as bad as they sound though. Also there were no moskito nets for the balcony, this could avoid having to sleep with everything shut!
TIPS: My suggestion is to rent a scooter or one of those funny 4 wheels bike (as we did, from £12 to £20/day) so you go anywhere you like. if you need umbrella and 2 sunbeds on the beach were about £7/day (july 09).
For this reasons i strongly recommend to save money with this bargain accommodation and just go out and have fun: beaches are amazing, you could visit one a day and definitely worth visiting la Plaka beach!!

We stayed here for 4 nights in the last week of June & the Colosseo Star ticked all the boxes for us. We were collected at the port by George & driven directly to the Star. Our room wasn't quite ready so we were sat down at the shady bar area & forces to drink ice cold Mythos until it was - sadly only 20 mins or so!! This wasn't a big deal as we hadn't booked.

We had studio 7 on the ground floor. Big room, A/C, fridge, cooking facilities, comfy double bed, big bathroom & everywhere spotless. The room also had a large outdoor shaded seating area. The grounds are lawned with a lovely pool & a kids play area to the side. There was also a multi sport area attached for basketball, volleyball, tennis etc - you just chose which net to put up & which markings to play to.

At various times during the day Maria was available to buy drinks & snacks but you can take your own from the fridge with no problem.

The Star is 3 mins max to the beach & 5 mins to the bars & tavernas of seafront Prokopios. We didn't bother with the beach as we'd had 4 days at the beginning of our holiday at the beach staying at George's brothers place above the taverna also called Colosseo!! Another lovely spot!! Both places at 40 Euros per night - brilliant value for money. Whilst at the Star most of the other guests were Greek which is a recommedation in itself. Try either property out, you won't be disappointed...
