Hotel Plaza is conveniently located across from the square, pedestrian street, and lots of activity. Of course, getting a balcony room facing the square means a bit more noise. Rooms are large and well furnished and baths clean. Interior courtyard, bar, dining room and lobby clean and comfortable.

Room Tip: If a little night noise is not an issue, get a balcony room off the plaza.

I may have been a bit harsh marking this as average but to me it did not warrant a very good - it is somewhere in between. What let it down for me was the food. The dinner choice I made was not the best and it was the only time during my stay when I needed to supplement my meal with nuts I had brought. Breakfast selection was not great. The bread (sliced white) was hard although the one small roll proved was fine. Fruit was served on the table already in portions and was a good serving but I prefer to select my own. You had a choice of egg which meant you got your eggs hot and made to order which was good.
However, the hotel itself has a lovely courtyard setting, very Seville like, where you can sit. Some rooms look out onto this courtyard. The bar area is small but a good atmosphere. There are various chairs on the landings and on the roof top where you can also sit and watch the sunset or the street scenes. We went up the spiral staircase to the top roof (not sure if you are meant to do so but the view is better!).
Our room was a good size; a small sitting area with TV (not much choice but we didn't bother anyway), bedroom and then bathroom. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. The shower was good although the hairdryer did not work. There was a choice of 220/110 sockets - choose wisely. The air con was effective and you can turn it down so less noisy. We had two balconies but best to keep closed if you want to reduce the street noise and avoid the petrol fumes. That said we spent a pleasant hour sitting out there with a beer and just watching the comings & goings of people in the street. The square opposite our room gets very busy with locals but that didn't keep us awake. I do know though that others on our tour found it difficult to sleep due to the noise (the majority slept well). I guess it depends on how well you sleep!
This town is worth a visit as it is off the well trodden tourist track. The tobacco factory is worth a peak inside to see the workers. There is a Casa de la Trova here but we didn't find it as good as others we had visited. There was too much commentary, perhaps because that evening it was being broadcast on local radio.

Room Tip: Internal room if you are sensitive to noise. Rooms overlooking to courtyard have a good view. If y...

Sancti Spiritus is a little off the Westernised tourist trail but this gem of a place is worth the detail if you want a break from the more touristy environs of Trinidad. The hotel is an old colonial building right on the lively central square and built, almost riad style, around a central square... The rooms are high ceilinged and beautiful, well maintained and clean, albeit without hot water (but that's par for the course in much of Cuba). The staff were friendly, breakfast par for the course for Cuba and the bar area was well situated and lively. Overall I would recommend this hotel both for the character and location and stayed in few better places during a fortnight in Cuba!

The hotel has been repainted a bright blue on the outside and is right on the main square in the centre of town - so sleep is not easy if people chatting and shouting, cars and lorries driving by at all hours and dogs and cockrells doing what they do best at dawn keep you awake. Food was very average in the restaurant - probably best to eat elsewhere for dinner, and breakfast is a set menu delivered to the table at 6.30am - so if you get there at 8am it is already drying nicely. We were there when it was hot and humid. The air conditioning unit gave us 15 minutes of noisy pleasure then died. The shower squirted out luke warm water in dribs and drabs and we soon spotted that we couldnt put our clothes into the only drawers - hundreds of little insects had got there first. The dubious pillow was easier to sleep on with a towel wrapped around it. The TV had an odd mix of stations and we settled on a pop classics mix to distract us and help us sleep

Wonderfully restored colonial house on the corner of the main square. Beautiful inner courtyard and lobby, terrace on the 3rd floor with spiral stairs to the roof where you can look out over the square and watch the sun set behind the mountains. Good food (for Cuba) and the front porch onto the square was great for sipping coffee or a mojito, conversation and watching the world go by. Lovely big bedroom with high ceilings and a well equipped bathroom. Our room was on the side, overlooking a side street and kitty corner from the local House of Music. Was noisy at 2am when the House closed and again at 7am when the traffic started up. Our friends had a smaller room at the back of the hotel and didn't hear a thing. Would have given it a 4 star rating if our room wasn't so noisy.

Room Tip: Get a back room. Smaller but quiet

We stayed here as part of a booked excusion from Havana to Trinidad so didn't personally chose hotel and can't comment on value for money.

But here goes...

Positives - staff were very friendly, nice first impression as downstairs is well kept. Right in the centre of town.

Negatives -

Needs a lot of maintenance. The ceiling on the stairs looked like it would cave in at any moment.

Room - Small, split into 3 parts - reception type area, bed and bathroom. We had to move the fridge around so it would be near a socket. There was no glass in the windows just shutters so if you wanted natural light, you have to have them open and suffer the insects and noise. Air con unit was very noisy and not very effective. Shower was a joke, no water pressure at all. 3am, I woke to use bathroom and found the sink covered in ants!!! Twin room not double.

Food - very average and not much choice.

In all we hated it....

The Hotel Plaza FEELS like a hotel of a bygone era - except for the tour buses coming by. However, given the very few options for tour groups vis-a-vis hotels in town, this is unlikely to change with any of the other hotels in the central area. The lobby is simple and understated, even with the 20 foot ceilings -- or however high they are. You can use the central courtyard for drinks and social time, or to listen to the live music played there during the evenings. On each of the landings on each of the floors, there are sofas and chairs so one can sit and listen to the music wafting upwards, or even lean over the railing to watch the goings on.

The rooms are VERY clean and VERY large. Great big windows open up and let you look out onto the streets below. Given that the town has very few autos by comparison to a town of similar size elsewhere, gazing down at the streets offers a world of sensory surprises.

The buffet is adequate without being over the top, and the staff are attentive. The bar staff seemed a "little" aloof at times.

All in all, a comfortable place to stay and I would return.

Room Tip: If you want to experience the city at night, ask for a room on the square. Otherwise, you may not li...
