Before adding any single word, I need to say that the nicest words wouldn’t be enough to describe how wonderful our stay in Santa Elena was. All the previous reviews make good justice to this place in relation to cleanliness, comfort, value and hospitality but I want to concentrate mine in the very special details that my group of ten will never forget.
My mother is native from Sancti Spiritus and this was her first visit to her home town since she left Cuba, 44 years ago! We wanted this trip to be memorable and based on the good Trip Advisor reviews I decided to stay in Hostal Santa Elena. Before leaving to Cuba I notified Sara and Elito, the owners, about my mother story. When we arrived at Santa Elena, on Christmas Day, they had a welcome cake for us with a message: “Merry Christmas and welcome back to your hometown”, with my mother’s name on it. My mother was so emotional.
Then during our stay we had a lot of help from them, giving us directions, helping my mom to find old friends….Finally, I need to comment on the food. It was exceptional. From delicious guava smoothies to wholesome breakfasts, with fresh eggs, fruits and breads and very delicious coffee. We also had an unforgettable Cuban dinner, with a juicy piece of pork roasted in house, exquisite congri rice and many other side dishes. Another fine detail was the salad. It was made with the theme of the flags of Cuba and Puerto Rico, where we came from. And the caramel flan, oh, that flan was the best. We even asked for the recipe and Sarita graciously give it to us.
At the end the price per person for two nights stay with breakfasts and a dinner was just around $30 USD! Amazing.
They invited us to drop by the hostal and have flan and coffee once more on our way back from Santiago to La Habana. Unfortunately our schedule changed and couldn’t make it. We would certainly have loved to meet them again and taste that marvelous flan.
Thanks to Sara, Elito, la China (the cook) and other staff for what was our best stay during our Cuba trip.
