“THE VENERATED SPORTSMANS ARMS”
Reviewed April 22, 2013

Some years ago we saw a newspaper article describing The Sportsmans Arms as "venerated" and I cannot think of a more appropriate description.
Under the same proprietorship for a staggering thirty-five years (most unusual for The Dales) the standard has never slipped and Sunday Lunch yesterday was perfect. The comfortable restaurant was full and the service was excellent as was the food-tender roast beef and a good choice of options.
We have visited the Sportsmans literally hundreds of times over that thirty-five year period and have never once been disappointed. The owner Ray Carter remains very much "hands on"The staff are all very friendly and competent and the setting is idyllic-this place is a good as the Michelin starred restaurants in the area and, frankly, better value for money.
Don't ever retire Ray!

we stayed here in very snowy weather which had kept some people away so it was a bit quiet, but that just meant we could have the fire to ourselves! The food here is lovely, black sheep ale is the best and service was excellent. The location is perfect, a beautiful part of Yorkshire.
The room was quite traditional and the four poster bed was a long way off the ground so if you're small you might need a stool to get on the bed!

Room Tip: don't choose the 4 poster bed if you would find it difficult to take a running jump to get on th...

A meal at the Sortsman's Arms is always a huge treat, from start to finish. Both the restaurant and bar, which have slightly different menus, are perfect: tasteful yet cosy and welcoming. The food is always amazing and beautifully presented and the staff couldn't be nicer. There is a downside though - the price! Prices on the menu seem to have edged up over the years so that they have become almost prohibitively expensive, which unfortunately, for us, means that the Sportsman's is now only an option for very special treats indeed. Well worth waiting for though.

Went to the Sporties for Sunday lunch with the family on Mothers Day and it was fantastic. The food, wine and service were all excellent and I can't recommend it highly enough. Had a super pint of Golden Best and Ray makes a mean G&T.

After a beautiful walk in the surrounding area of the soortmans we turned up for lunch in the bar. With a roaring fire, fantastic food and great service it was a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. The second time I have been but I will be back again.

dropped in for lunch with my wife when we were in the area. Wet and cold day but the Sportsman had a warm and friendly atmosphere and great food much of it locally sourced. No hesitation in recommending it .

Good food, excellent staff. However our bedroom was in the annex and it felt as though we were in a converted garage. It also smelt rather damp. Overall the restaurant is good but our room and the residents lounge were disappointing. Both very old fashioned and tired. All needs brightening up. Great peaceful location

Room Tip: Check rooms in main building. Do not use the barn/annex
