This castle was fantastic. It was very good value and very well appointed. There are many displays and a great deal of information is given.
Below is an extract from my sons blog.
We went inside the castle and it was a museum. There were lots of information and they could only fight wars on Mondays and Tuesdays. True. We saw the knights room, and there was a full knight in shining armour and we put some armour on too. There was an ammunition room where they made all the gunpowder. It is made from sulphur that comes from volcanoes, coal from willow trees, and saltpeter. There was a game called the gunpowder game and if you got the mix right the room pretends to go BOOM!

Outside there was a canon game that you have to put ingredients into the canon and twice I pretended to shoot Daddy!

This is a great attraction. Do yourself a favour and check it out.

This is a very nice castle in a very nice setting at the river bank, but has not much (original) decoration inside compared to the nicest castle in Holland, Muiderslot. To start with, parking is free and a visit to the toilet as well. That's already special in Holland. If you just want to look around the castle, than you don't need to buy a ticket (hefty price) which is good. With the entrance ticket, you can go all the way up to the top of the castle en enjoy the view.
The surrounding buildings are currently under renovation, so not much is open.
Also check the opening times. During low season, they are closed most of the time!

This castle speaks to the imagination, because it used to be a prison. Someone escaped by hiding in a book case! It is a little bare, but still interesting.

A step back in time, you can feel the history all around you. Very impressive building. There is little furniture so you need to use your imagination to visualize how it must have looked.

My sister and I were fortunate enough to tour this castle a number of times with my Opa Jac who was so amused by our wide-eyed, American viewpoints. We had to be ferried across one of the rivers to get them and heard tales of sheep falling in the moat and having to be rescued. I love castles, and this one is in such good repair that movies are filmed there, and parties are held for the fortunate few who are able to be there at the right time. Trying to imagine living there with the huge rooms and fireplaces was easy in summer, but I am imagining that the winters were terribly cold no matter how big the fireplaces are!
