Review of The Flodigarry Hotel

We had lunch at Flodigarry. The food was good, not necessarily exceptional. What we found most memorable is the hotel itself and the location. We thoroughly enjoyed our time. We did tour through the hotel and I highly recommend walking through the public rooms.

The hotel was very quiet--as was the restaurant---when we stopped. We had a lunch reservation--but it was not needed. The hotel rooms looked very nice and this could be an ideal location to stay for someone looking for quiet and isolation.

A really special place
Visited in August of this year and although we didn't stay, the quality and staff made us try to book in. No surprise that they were fully booked!
The staff were so friendly and the food was amazing.
It was a very warm sunny day and the views were absolutely amazing.
We have decided we will stay nowhere else on the island (if possible) in future!!

Quick Bite While touring the island
Had a coffee and sponge cake. The sponge cake and dessert were excellent . The location is beautiful. It is the only place for miles to stay. Be careful on Sundays when driving. Make sue you have eaten before you travel. You won't find food available all day.

Don't bother, very overpriced for poor facilities!!
After travelling around Scotland for a week this was the most disappointing accommodation and most expensive by far!! We were put in the cottage at rear of hotel and frankly it was awful, smelt fusty, no wifi as stated (I needed this for work purposes) no where to hang shower hose, door rotten.... The list goes on. Not at all as described in booking advert. The breakfast was average , Frankly unless you want to be able to say you stayed in Flora Macdonalds cottage don't bother.

High Tide Restaurant - excellent food, but...
We booked for dinner after a pleasant and relaxing lunch in the bar, a number of days previously. The hotel is in a spectacular setting. Its decor is funky traditional lodge. The staff are in general very nice and obliging. The food we had at dinner was exceptional. Why, then did two hours in the restaurant feel like an anxious eternity. Partly our fault, partly the erratic service. Our fault - we arrived for the start of service. We were offered one of three mid room tables for two, not the better table next to the wall. We took the best of the options, compliantly. The couple behind us challenged their choices and insisted on the wall table. Dumb us. But that raised our attention to: long waits, some tables offered multiple bread servings, others not, problems at some tables with incomplete menu books, little communication regarding reasons for service delays to tables, an end of meal table cluttered with our empty pre meal drink glasses, an empty water jar, and empty wine collar and bottle. And, oh yes, about the couple at the good table, their cheese plate was on an elegant slate with metal and wood handles, ours was on an old bread board with slits down the laminates. Consistency of service is a training responsibility of the establishment. This was missing at Flodigarry.
Full disclosure, my mother in law owned a seasonal hotel on the west coast of Ireland. My wife worked there over the years, as I did in the evenings for two seasons.

Spectacular View! Luxury prices for standard rooms and service.
I would give a better review if I didn’t feel a bit cheated. Luxury Hotels are about the details. If you don't deliver the details, don't overcharge. I do understand they are on an island and it is high season so I expect to pay up, but this was absurd. I might feel more sympathetic, but we stayed at another place in the Isle of Skye, albeit without a view, that was exceptional and was significantly less costly.

We went here on a recommendation from a friend that loved it a few years back. I am guessing since we learned it changed hands and I am not sure the new owners have the same taste level.

We did book one of the cheaper rooms, last one available if I remember correctly. We peeked into a nicer room and it looked more charming by comparison. But, for 232 pounds a night, I expect better. The décor looked like a corporate budget hotel – too much tacky cheap wall paper – it was everywhere…faux book spines, faux tufted leather, script, faux postcards, faux animal skin…and on and on…. The furniture had flourishes that reminded me of the movie betteljuice – very 80’s/early 90’s. On the bottom floor are two divided common spaces. One is a bit more aviator, restoration hardware chairs? And mid century meets the 90’s, with spectacular views. The second an atrium had some nice touches, old suitcases, rustic bird cages. The main lobby probably looked pretty chic and boutique a few years back, but it needs a refresh. Which if I understood they did recently, hard to fathom since it looked so out dated.

The food while some of it quite good, was also very expensive in both the restaurant and bar. Outdated recipes, lots of sauces and over done embellishments like bread basket cages over a small serving of salad. The salad was delicious flavors, but small portion for the cost. Main courses were in the mid to high 30 pounds per dish.

We had a Whisky tasting and enjoyed our conversation with the server outside of the Whisky, but he didn’t have a great knowledge about whisky and they weren't very generous with the variety – would have been less expensive to do our own and didn't learn anything from the experience.

Bedroom had old rugs on the floor – they were rough and maybe clean, but needed replacing. Bed was moderately comfortable. Shower was small with broken door and no place to put shampoo etc. so you had to reach around to grab it. since it didn’t drain properly putting our shampoo on the floor wasn’t an option. The soaps, tea and snacks in the room were nothing special, looked like chain hotel stuff. I would expect better from a boutique hotel. They did seem to give a welcome drink, but we didn’t get one – maybe we were too early. I was definitely disappointed in my stay and would not recommend it.
